In good governance news, India plans to advocate for a decrease in citizens’ use of smokeless
tobacco. The Health Ministry will develop policies to disseminate information on the
dangers of chewing tobacco. The European Commission has stated, “The risk of oral cancer is
up to 50 times greater for the person who chews tobacco. It also increases the risk
of throat and pharynx cancer.” The Global Adult Tobacco Survey has reported that 206
million people chew tobacco in India. Furthermore, the nation is ranked as having the most oral
cancer patients in the world.
We applaud your commitment to the health of your citizens, India. May all people adopt
life-affirming habits for a vibrant global future.
