The next trick for writing super clear sentences is to avoid heavy words. Heavy words is an
idea I took from Rudolph Flesch. You might know him. He's the guy who created the reading
grade level system as well as the readability score you see in Microsoft Word.
Anyway, let's take a look at his list of heavy words and suggested alternatives.
First up is his list of heavy prepositions and conjunctions. Something like "along the
lines of" can just be "like". "for the purpose of" can become "for". "in accordance with"
changes to "by" or "under" and so on.
He also has a list of too heavy connectives. A word like "accordingly" can just be "so".
"nevertheless" can just be "but", and so on.
Finally, he suggests using simple verbs that describe the human body. Your writing will
sound very natural when you combine these verbs simple adverbs. Here's his list.
We'd end up creating phrasal verbs like "bear down" and "cast off" and "make up".
You can find Rudolph's list and many others online, but I'm not sure that anyone has ever
actually memorized one of those lists. Go ahead if you want, but the bigger point is
to understand that heavy words exist and you should avoid them.
