I'm Phil Schwarz, Emeritus Professor of History at Virginia Commonwealth University.
I have been studying
Gabriel's conspiracy for some time.
Behind me is the Brook Road, which was the main stage road and
place of transportation going north and south--
Fredericksburg,
Richmond,
and Petersburg.
The conspirators
plan to use this road
to move in and
takeover Richmond.
They were unable to do so, and that
put them in a very bad spot.
And two people who were slaves living near here
informed on them [the conspirators] and told their master.
The governor, Governor James Monroe, sent out the militia
and they've many of them were captured.
