Hi, I'm Stephen Box
I'm standing on Montana Avenue here in Santa Monica
and the reason we're here today is because we're looking for
an electric car charging stations on the street.
One of the objections to our efforts to put up an electric charging station
on Hollywood Blvd. is that it's not permitted according to State Law,
or ordinance, and that's what we're...
...or code. And that was one of the objections we heard when we were
at city council and working with the city council offices in Hollywood.
But as you can see here, on Montana Avenue at 11th,
there are two charging stations.
One of them is older. It's the older paddle charger,
and there is a newer station over there,
so it's accommodating two different types of electric vehicles.
It's supported with signs, that indicate that these parking spaces are just for
electric vehicles.
And, so apparently there's signage to support the concept
of electric charging stations on a public street.
So we're in Santa Monica, it's obviously part of the landscape on Montana Ave.
and so any objections, either Santa Monica is violating state code
or it's permitted.
If it's permitted,
then I guess we're close to bringing it to Hollywood Blvd.
Thanks for joining us.
Hi, this is Stephen Box,
I'm standing here on West Adams Blvd. just north of USC.
Lovely residential community.
Fairly busy street. This is a Sunday morning, so it's not so busy right now.
The interesting thing about this street is there are no parking meters in a very
densely populated area that's abundantly, ah, the streets are full with parked cars.
Except for these two spaces. Because these two spaces are reserved for ZipCar.
Car-share. And so anyone else that parks here is going to get towed.
ZipCar of course is a company that provides cars to communities
so people can share that car and use it just when they need it.
By the hour or by the day.
So here you have an example of how on-street parking can be set aside
for a car-share program,
in fact there are locations all around the USC area,
I think there are a dozen spaces that are set aside for car-share.
So here it is, it's ZipCar. That's the company that provides these vehicles.
And there's propaganda if you will, there's a website,
there's a place for brochures.
But this demonstrates, the City of LA does provide parking spaces
for a car share company on the street.
Thanks for joining us in the USC neighborhood.
Well, here we are on the east side of UCLA on the roof of a parking structure,
ah, three level parking structure,
and we found our first ZipCar.
Earlier we thought that we found some, but those were just locals that park in the
ZipCar parking spaces and they were unfamiliar with the ZipCar concept,
nor have not seen any ZipCars.
But we found one here on the top of the parking garage, it's one of two spaces.
In one of two spaces set aside for the ZipCars, and it's a 24 hr tow-away zone.
The interesting thing if you look around
you'll see that over here in this parking structure, parking is not so popular.
I don't know if it's because they actually charge you to park here,
as opposed to the entire Westwood area where you can park for free on the street.
Kind of an odd concept, but anyway,
here we are on top of the parking structure
and here is one ZipCar that we found in our tour of both USC and UCLA,
and, so, you can see,
the City of LA, partnering with ZipCar,
sets aside parking spaces on the street and in this parking structure
by way of example, along with some other parking structures
in the UCLA area, for the use of the ZipCar shared car.
Thanks for joining us at UCLA.
