If you've ever doubted that Nicholas Cage can be a great actor
then you need to see Joe. The title character is a hard-working
ex-con who befriends a troubled teenager becoming a surrogate father figure.
This is a gripping serious drama
about a young boy in a bad situation whose only hope is a man
trying to get over his own violent tendencies. It also happens to be
and excellent film. Gary is a 15-year-old drifter constantly on the move with his
family thanks to his dads
alcoholism. He runs into a work crew one day and he lands a job by impressing
their boss.
Joe seems like a great guy has a respect of his men
but he has his own personal demons. He is an ex-con and has a violent temper that
goes from 0
to watch out he's got a beer bottle in his hand in a snap your fingers.
But still he befriends this kid, he takes him under his wing.
Unfortunately men from Joe's past and Gary's
abusive drunken father just cannot leave them alone.
I heard all the acclaim when this movie came out I was concerned it was going to
be too
art house to stylish to feel relatable. This is one gritty,
down to earth drama that had me feeling that these were real
tangible problems and dark troubles instead of an
artistic a look into a bad situation It was in and how the cast spoke, the choice of
dialogue and
the poor country setting that it helped it feel more genuine. Director David Gordon
Green pulls
off a riveting haunting tale that not only had me spellbound to know how it was all
gonna turn out
but I enjoyed walking through the darkness of these people's lives.
Amid the hard-hitting storylines are moments of humor
warmth that only surprised me but help this film
win me over. With the emphasis on the relationship between the two main
characters
this film needed these actors to step up and they
did. Tye Sheridan to portrays Garys a teenager whose
mature beyond his years because of how he has suffered
but he's still a boy. It's a rare combination of strength
and vulnerability that he brings to the character and it's a testament
to the caliber this young talent. Now as far as Nicolas Cage as Joe is concerned
where has this guy been?! This is an outstanding performance from an actor
showing how we became a star in the first place. He masters the complete
emotional range of a very
tortured man but at the same time he gives us a sense of humor
and just a natural ease. This defies all the over the top performances
that made this guy and Internet meme. Please, Mr. Cage,
keep doing work like this because you were awesome in this movie.
Joe is a harrowing story about a man trying to come to grips with his own
sins
so we can protect a boy going down a bad road. I found this to be
a strikingly powerful film and a return to form for an
actor that Hollywood has counted out. So if this
dark troubling yet compassionate story sounds interesting to you
then see if this ex-con can do the right thing. Trust me.
