[Narrator] Rady Children's Hospital, serving more than five counties and an ever-growing population.
As the largest children’s hospital in California, this important healthcare provider
realized expansion was a necessity.
The challenge - to do so in a manner tailored for energy efficiency and specialized patient care.
[Tim Jacoby] There's actually several different tenants that we had when we designed this building.
We really have to design for a wide range of interest and also, sizes.
To operate on a one year-old is totally different than operating on an eighteen year-old.
You want the children and the parents to be able to come to the hospital,
in a very stressful, normally, situation and you want to diffuse that stress a little bit.
We wanted to make it sustainable, maintainable, and so, if we can reduce that operating cost,
and we can take that money and put it toward a new M.R.I. machine
or to improved instruments in the operating room.
Put the money directly toward serving children instead of infrastructure.
[Narrator] Accomplishing those diverse goals required putting together a great team
with common priorities - a true project-first approach.
[Tim Jacoby] The team members, whether it's the contractors or the design team, consultants,
San Diego Gas & Electric, every one of them wanted to do what was best for the kids.
Because the real cost of a building is not the initial construction,
even though that's very expensive for a hospital.
The real costs are the operating costs over the life of the building.
So that was very important in our design and construction.
It's built very well, the right materials.
We beat Title 24 energy standards by about 15.2 percent.
That's very measurable; it's excellent.
And the other thing too, is, you take a look at our landscaping, the light or the design
and what we would really get out of it.
We got out of it a better environment for our staff and for the patients.
That, for a hospital, especially a children's hospital is what it's all about.
