Welcome to the video tutorial on writing compound sentences with a semi colon. Let’s quickly
review what a compound sentence is. A compound sentence is two simple sentences joined together.
There are three ways to join together two simple sentences into a compound sentence.
For this video, we will be discussing joining simple sentences using a semi-colon.
Let’s take the following sentences as an example. Thomas ate spaghetti. He loves it.
These are two simple sentences that are complete thoughts. Both of them have a subject and
a verb. They are also related to each in other in their subject matter. Therefore, they can
be made into a compound sentence. To create a compound sentence using a semi-colon, you
simply change the period separating the two sentences into a semi-colon, as you can see
here underlined in blue. And changed the capital “H” to a lower case “h”, as you can
see underlined in yellow. Let’s look at one more example. Julie loves
playing with her kids; she is excited to play this weekend. Both of these simple sentences
are complete thoughts related to each other in their subject matter, therefore we can
turn them into a compound sentence. To change them into a compound sentence using a semi-colon,
we just remove the period and insert a semi-colon, as shown underlined in blue. We also must
change the upper case “S” (for “she”) to a lower case “s”.
Good luck writing compound sentences using semi-colons.
