Hi everyone. This is Monica Traphagan with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake
City. This briefing talks about snow that will impact the morning commute for the
Northern Wasatch Front and Cache Valley tomorrow. It was created on Thursday, February
6th 2014 and should not be used after Friday February 7th.
Briefly, here are the two main points I’ll be discussing during this briefing. First,
increasing snow tonight and tomorrow will cause travel difficulties during the Friday
morning commute, primarily for Davis county and areas to the north. Snow should remain light
over Salt Lake and Utah counties. And second, this snow is part of a more extended
snowy period. Snow will continue through Monday, and parts of northern Utah will see
significant snow during this time.
For now, let’s focus on the snow tomorrow. As far as timing goes, we’ll see snow start to
increase overnight ahead of a weak cold front. As the front moves through between about 4am
and 9am, northern Utah will see a period of heavier snow that will impact the commute. This
snow will continue into the afternoon hours.
As far as valley snow accumulations go, they increase as you go farther northward in
the state. Little accumulation is expected over Salt Lake and Utah counties, so the commute
will likely see the least impact there. In Davis and Weber counties, some locations
may see as much as four inches. Valley accumulations will be greatest over Box Elder County
and the Cache Valley, where we are expecting three to six inches. This snow will cause
difficult travel tomorrow morning for the Cache Valley and the northern Wasatch Front.
Additionally, the mountains will continue to see winter driving conditions due to the
ongoing snow.
Now, this isn’t just one storm system. The system impact the Friday morning commute is part
of an extended period of snow lasting through Monday. Some northern Utah locations could
see significant accumulations. The mountains of northern Utah should see one to four feet,
with the best accumulations closer to the Idaho border. The northern Wasatch Front (Davis,
Weber, and Box Elder Counties) along with the Cache Valley can expect 10 to 18 inches through
Monday. Meanwhile, accumulations will be lighter for the Central and Southern Wasatch Front,
more like 1 to 4 inches.
In summary, increasing snow overnight will impact travel during the Friday morning
commute. These impacts will primarily be felt in Davis county and points northward.
This storm is part of an extended period of snow for northern Utah that will last
through Monday, and some locations could see significant accumulations during this time.
