It's time for Animaniacs for the Super Nintendo! In this platformer with pseudo-beat 'em up
elements, you take control of the Warner brothers and the Warner sister. You're tasked with
recovering the scripts stolen by Pinky and the Brain, who plan to use them in their latest
"take over the world" plot. While this is your standard affair of reaching
the end of each stage and fighting a level appropriate boss, the focus is mainly on these
scripts. They are hidden in various places and will sometimes only reveal themselves
if you perform certain actions. Some of these only offer a limited window to complete them.
So while there may not be a time limit to the level per se, there can be to gathering
all of the scripts. The game is a platformer for the most part,
but it does include some aspects of beat 'em ups. There are planes to each level and you
can defend yourself somewhat by picking up objects to throw. Other than that, you'll
mostly be staying away from enemies or bouncing off their heads, which does capture the style
of the Warners from the show. It's all much more difficult than it sounds,
and one hit will land you in the clutches of Ralph, the security guard. Each Warner
acts as a life and when you continue, you only get one of them back. To compensate for
this, the coins scattered about give you spins on the slot machine that you can see on the
bottom of the screen. This doles out continues or gives you the missing Warners back, if
you haven't already rescued them from their tower. You can easily rack up so many spins
that the difficulty is balanced out by the load of continues you can earn just by collecting
these coins. Pretty much every character from the show
makes an appearance here, and the game is packed with movie references. Just to name
a few, you'll see spoofs of The Terminator, Aliens, and The Neverending Story. All of
these are found in their respectively themed studio, which includes sets ranging from science
fiction planets to sea epics. It's not as much fun as, say, watching the
show, but Animaniacs is enjoyable. It's at least good enough to play through some evening
if you're a fan of the show. So if you have the spare time tonight and the cash, then
there's only one question: What do you wanna do tonight?
