If you are learning to drive in a manual car, like this one -- good on you.
It is a bit more involved, but professional driving instructors recommend it as you never
know what kind of vehicle you will end up driving.
Even though most vehicles are automatic these days, there are still plenty of manuals around.
If you've learned on a manual, driving an automatic is easy --
but going from an automatic to a manual is quite difficult if you've never learned.
The trickiest part about driving a manual, is managing the clutch and changing the gears.
The best way to learn is to practice.
Ok Kade, let's go through our pre-driving checks.
When you start a car, make sure it is in neutral. Neutral is the space in between the gears,
when no gear is connected. You should also get into the habit of putting
the clutch in as a back up in case you've left the car in-gear.
The default position for the gearstick is to sit in the middle in between 3rd and 4th gear
Now, you always run a danger when you're
changing from 1st to 2nd gear that you may slip and go into 4th.
The best way to avoid that is when you're changing into 1st and down into 2nd is to
cup your hand so that you're pushing the gear lever away from you.
Ok so you, push it to the side and up into first.
Keep pushing that way down into 2nd.
Then when changing from 2nd to 3rd,
3rd to 4th,
and 4th to 5th,
cup your hand so it's coming back towards you.
Let's give that a go but remember keep your eyes out the front, not down at what your hand's doing.
You should still be able to see the gear lever out of your peripheral vision, alright?
So it's clutch in.
1st gear. 2nd gear.
3rd gear. 4th gear.
5th gear and neutral.
Clutch out.
Perfect. Well done.
And you cup your hand the same way of course when selecting reverse.
Sure. Just like that.
Just like that. Now some gear levers will have an extra action
that you need to do. You may need to press down on the gearstick
to bring it over to go into reverse.
(Sure)
Or some may have a ring that you need to pull up and go over and into reverse,
but that doesn't count on this model.
Ok next we've got the handbrake. If the car is stationary, keep the handbrake on.
Okay. Do I also need to put the handbrake on
when I'm just on the flat?
Absolutely, it only takes a very slight gradient for the
car to start rolling, or even a strong gust of wind can get the car moving.
Right, well done.
