Well, the main reason why I think it’s
important for my students to connect
with the community is because they learn
a sense of civic responsibility.
They learn about the issues that are
going on in their Bellingham community.
And I feel that the students they can learn
when you teach them in the classroom,
but when you can take it out of the classroom
and bring the material to life I feel that
they get more out of it.
So, by going out into the community,
they get more out of the classroom by
being able to bring the material to life.
And so, for an example, I have a group that
works with the Chore Program and the
Chore Program is an assisted living program
in our community that helps people with
various disabilities, the elderly, and what
they have is they have people come in and
either clean the house for these members
or they might cook a meal for them.
And so my students are engaged in that process
and it’s all about the helping but at the same
time they’re learning about that individual
and so the chore program is a fabulous
program that I’ve used for several quarters.
