I'm Jennifer Gardner, I work for Enterprise Rent-a-Car and I am a talent acquisition specialist, so basically what I do
is interview, go to carrer fairs, come to events like this; this is my whole job so I feel like I have some kind of expert knowledge
on what to where to an interview and how to dress and things like that. I guess at Enterprise, our culture
if you can tell by what I'm wearing today this is what I wear each and everyday, so it's very professional. We do have a business professional
dress code, so I absolutely look for that if I looking for someone at a career fair, if someone's coming in to interview
and I think that regardless of what the company's culture is or their dress code, you should absolutely be wearing
what these models are wearing today. You wanna be as conservative, as professional as possible and really
the reason behind that is because we don't wanna be looking at a cute necklace or the 'fun' shirt or crazy tie or whatever
that you're wearing. We wanna be listening to what you're saying, so kind of having a blank slate. It's not so that we're judging
oh is that a really expensive suit, or what kind of leather are those shoes. It's not like that at all, it's more just
so you're a clean blank slate, everybody looks the same so we're paying attention to what's coming out of your mouth
and really listening to that.
If interviewees want to stand out or show a little bit of their personality, is it OK to have some accessories as long as subtle and goes kinda with what they're doing?
I think so 'cause I mean what I look for, especially what I hire for: sales, customer service and management.
So a lot of what stands out to me in an interview is your personality and how you are relating to me.
So things like that, if it's gonna make you feel more confident and comfortable in yourself, do it.
I'm not gonna say 'oh well she wore a pin so forget that she was amazing in the interview, I'm not gonna hire her'
That's not what we're doing either. It's not like if there's a great candidate that happens to not have a suit jacket on
I'm automatically gonna pass on them. There might be some people out there who are a little meaner than I am
but for the most part, I think really we just want to be really focused and paying attention to the interview and that's why
just be tasteful and really thoughtful I think with any accessories that you use.
On behalf of Enterprise, I worked for Enterprise like 35 years ago, and it's exactly what she says
very professional, but my career right now has been banking. And banking, everything they wore up there as a bank manager
I would look at and say 'OK' but one thing that is very important what people don't realize is this:
you can keep your bow on that represents you but if you have different face piercings and tattoos you have to consider the job you're going for.
So you always have to keep it professional, you know you keep you in it, always make eye contact because that's one thing we look at
if you're looking down and I'm speaking to you, I'm like OK they really wasn't listening or maybe they were a little nervous
but that's not good so you always wanna make eye contact and yes as you just stated if it's something you've done in a community
you might wanna let them know, you know I'm a volunteer at the church or things like that So
those are things that are very important and always dress professional no matter what the job details if someone you may know
is interviewing you 'cause I've interviewed people because they're a friend of someone and they may think well it's OK
to come in this way, that's not cool because then I'm thinking 'OK, they think they're gonna get the job because of this'
but I need you to be professional at all times, regardless of who you know, so you always have to come in dressed for success, at all times
Let's give Monica a hand for being our MC
And Jaime for being our DJ for the evening!
Today's event was a kickoff for National Career Development Month. We have activities going on throughout the month
and there's flyers up front that show you what those additional activities are. So there's a variety of workshops
regarding resumes, interviews, cover letters, getting into grad school, applying for law school. All of those different types of things
that we're packing into this month so you can get a whole well-rounded approach to career development
We do have some more snacks and you are welcome to hangout and socialize some more. This is gonna close
our portion with the models. We're gonna have them come back out and mingle and mix with you
So enjoy the food that we'll be bringing out in just a moment. Thank you
