This is Video Four of How to Build a Deck. In the previous video, we showed you how to
construct the frame. In this video, we'll show you how to lay the deck: from laying
it out, cutting to length, to pre-drilling, to nailing each board down. Before you start
laying the deck, sort your decking material into piles of equal length to make the job
easier. The next step is to lay the decking over the
joists making sure that our intersections sit over our joists. Also, keep in mind that
we want a square cut and don't forget to scatter your joints. To get a straight edge, we need
to ensure that we cut at 90 degrees. Once we have done this it will allow for a clean
joint. Now that we have cut our deck to length, scattered our joints, it's time to mark the
position of our holes. To do this, we mark down the centre of our joists, coming in at
equal spaces at our other end. Then we need to drill
and then nail, keeping in mind that we need a spacer. The best spacer is a nail. Just
repeat this process down the full length of the timber and across the whole deck. After
eight to ten rows, we need to check to make sure that our boards are still running parallel
with one another. To do this, we measure out, noting that the length of the board is the
same measurement from the first board to that board, ensuring that our last board will have
a nice finish. As you can see, we have finished the deck
but we have some overhang. To get rid of this, all we need to do is use a circular saw and
a straight edge to cut down along the edge of the deck. Well, that's it for building
a deck and how good does it look?
