Welcome, in this Map My Run tutorial we are going to show you how to use its functionality to start creating simple mapped running routes.
First enter MapMyRun.com into your browser address bar.
This brings up the home screen prompting you to sign up with facebook or email. In the previous video you learned how to sign up. Click on the login button in the top-right corner of the page.
Enter your email or username, and password, or login with facebook, then click login.
Next click the create map tab.
On the left-hand side of the screen enter a starting location, such as a city or specific address, then click search.
Zoom in or out using the Google maps features on the left-hand side of the map window.
Drag the little yellow man onto the screen to see a street view.
Drag your view of the map by clicking and dragging with the mouse.
Click on an area of the map to start mapping your run.
The tool box on the right hand side of the screen offers an array of functionality such as:
auto follow roads, undo, clear the map, center the map view on your route, map the route out and back, reverse the start and end of your route, and return to the start of your route using the shortest distance.
The route generator will take the shortest distance to the point that you click, within the parameters that you have selected in the tool menu. Click on strategic locations to create a map.
Click undo to remove the last action or segment of the route.
Uncheck auto follow roads to make direct paths, such as running through a park.
Recheck auto follow roads when you get back to a road to make the mapping easier.
Click out and back if you want to retrace your steps to the starting point. You will see mile markers along the way to indicate distance.
Click return to map your run back to the starting point.
On the left-hand side of the screen Map My Run asks for some simple information to identify your route.
Choose an activity—in this case a run.
Name the route for later reference.
You can enter if you’ve done the route before, if so, you can enter your time.
As you scroll down you will see directions and notes, which take you through your route descriptively as well as on the map window.
When you are done click the orange save button on the top-left of the screen.
The total distance will be displayed along with options to print, send to phone, and edit among others.
A helpful feature is the 3D flyover of your route. You will need to have the Google Earth plugin installed for this feature.
This will take you on a visual journey of your route, so you can be familiar with the turns and locations when you're on your run.
Now go run!
