Hello and welcome to olive-abacus.com I am d’Olive Branche and thank you for joining
me as I travel the world of olives documenting my observations about this incredible fruit.
Today I’ll be meeting with Bastian Jordan.
He is the grandson of Doris and Thomas Kerner who migrated from Germany to the island of
Lesvos, Greece in 1989.
The Kerner’s new home then was surrounded with olive trees.
Out of curiosity they began pressing the olives into olive oil for their own use.
Today we’ll be meeting with the Kerner’s grand son, Bastian who will share more about
his family’s history as is related to olive oil.
So lets go meet Bastian shall we.
I was scheduled to meet Bastian in the old town section of Düsseldorf at a place called
Bistro im Maxhaus. There are parts of the old town where only pedestrians and vehicles
with special passes are allowed and this is where I ended up walking around for quite
a while.
It was about minus 6 degrees outside that day even thought the sun was shining. And
the address I got of Google maps was to the church of St. Maximilian in in the old town
After walking around for a while and to the back of the church, I saw a sign for the Bistro
im Maxhaus. The sign was in front the back entrance to the church….
As I entered the building following the signs I still had doubts about the validity of the
directions but I keep following the signs anyway.
As I walked through the thick concrete doorways I looked over my left shoulder and saw a crucifix
that I could not help stopping to stare at, because I still could not believe that I was
going to have lunch prepared with olive oil on the compound of a Catholic church. But
on second thought, olive oil has been a part of every religion I know off.
Up ahead of me I could see tables and chairs and people eating and drinking as you normally
would in any other bistro.
The dining area of the Bistro use to be a meditation patio of St Maximilian and there
once was a rose garden there I was later told.
Today the garden is the dining area of Bistro im Maxhaus where Bastian was awaiting my arrival.
Now Bastian
and
I had never met before today but it did not take long for
us
to become comfortable in each others presence
since
we
share a
common passion, the olives.
Closing Well I hope you
enjoyed my visit with Bastian and do subscribe to my YouTube channel where you’ll find
complete information about olives from soil to oil.
And you’ll be among the firs to know whenever I upload new video information about olives.
I am the d’olive Branche, until the next time.
