Are you looking for books, articles, or media at the Campus Library, serving University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community
College, but aren’t sure where to start? This short tutorial will show you how to search UW WorldCat for materials available from the UW
Libraries, how to limit your search to the Campus Library, and how to understand the parts of a library record. UW WorldCat shows
you books and media that are owned by University of Washington Libraries. It also includes materials from around the world, and is
growing to include many articles from our article and research databases. The UW WorldCat search box is located on the campus library
homepage at http://library.uwb.edu. If you know your book or article title, you can enter it here. Or if you want something by or about a
particular person, you would enter that person’s name. Let’s say you want to find a book about comic books and films. So you’ll do a keyword
search for comic books and films, and click search. If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to log in with your UW NetID. This will
allow you to search and access UW-restricted electronic articles and ebooks. This search found over 7,000 books, films, and articles.
You’ll see items that are owned by the UW Libraries first, and then items at other libraries. Notice that you can use the limits on the left to
narrow your search by Format, Author, and other limits. Are too many of your results at other libraries, so you want to limit your search only
to items held by the Campus Library? To do this, select “Bothell Campus” from the dropdown tab at the top of your search screen, or click on
the UWB-CCC tab in the box on the homepage. Just remember that setting this limit will exclude article databases from your search, so you
won’t see any articles in your search results. So, let’s look at one of these results and get to know the parts of a library record. This one is a
book, and the basic information is at the top: the author, title and publication information. The “Find a copy online” section tells you if this book
is available as an ebook through the UW Libraries. If this were an article record, you would see a link to access the full text, or a
button to check our other databases for the full text. The “Find a copy in the library” section tells you where in the library the physical item is
located. The call number tells you where to find the book on the library shelves… and the status tells you if the book is AVAILABLE and ready to
be checked out. You can also see copies owned by other UW Libraries, other libraries in the Pacific Northwest, and libraries worldwide.
Remember, UW Bothell students can use the Request button to request that items from other UW Libraries, Summit Libraries, and elsewhere
be delivered to the Campus Library at no cost to students. Cascadia students are able to check out items at other UW Libraries in person, and
can return the items directly to the Campus Library. Farther down the page are details that are useful to know before you search for the
book on the shelf, such as the table of contents if included in the record. Related subjects are clickable links that will show you other items on
the same subjects. Back on the Campus Library Homepage, there’s another option to search for materials. The UW-only Catalog link allows you
to search our own UW Libraries Catalog, and you can limit your search to just the Bothell/CCC Campus Library. And if you’re ever
confused about where a certain section of books is located in the library, click on the “Hours and Contact Info” link on the Library Homepage, and
click on "Locations of Materials in the Campus Library" to look up the section by name, and view the section on our map. Our third-floor map
includes the layout of call numbers. For more search tips and information about UW WorldCat, click on the “Help” link in the WorldCat search
