Exactly 60 years ago today,... officials representing the United Nations, China and North Korea
signed the Korean Armistice Agreement that brought an end to three years of war.
Marking the day,... a national ceremony took place in Seoul,... to remember the fallen
heroes. Han Dae-un has our top story. Marking the
60th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement,... some 4-thousand people, including high-ranking
politicians, delegations from UN allied countries and Korean War veterans gathered at Seoul's
War Memorial Peace Plaza on Saturday. President Park Geun-hye was also there...
and delivered a keynote speech which contained a strong message to North Korea.
"Any North Korean provocations that threaten the lives of our people will not be tolerated.
I urge the North to abandon its nuclear program and take the path towards change and peace."
The president stressed that South Korea would do its best to bring about that change to
the reclusive state so that it can become a responsible member of the international
community. She also reaffirmed her will to build a global
peace park inside the Demilitarized Zone,... which she says will be a stepping stone towards
reunification.
Commemorating the 60th year since the end of fighting in the Korean War, UN Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon also sent a message to North Korea. Through a letter, he stated that "the international
community is firm and united in not accepting North Korea as a nuclear-weapon State"...
and that "the six-party talks process remains a viable track to address contentious issues
in a comprehensive manner."
Meanwhile over in Washington,... U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel expressed his gratitude
to Korean war veterans for the sacrifices they made to protect South Korea.
He said that their service liberated millions of people from tyranny... and helped the U.S.
forge a strong and lasting partnership with South Korea.
Along with U.S. President Barack Obama,... Hagel is scheduled to attend an Armistice
Day ceremony in Washington on Saturday local time.
