up hi this is John McNally Adorama TV
and today I'm going to talk to you about shooting at around the portrait Adorama
TV presents
photo on the go with Joe McNally where you go behind the scenes to see how
great photos army
I've been experimenting
a bit I you know the DSLR for men it's wonderful
but when you push a wide angle DSLR
lens in close to a subject any per month the edges are things
what he risk distortion you also gain a lot of this
and if you are going for this it might be advisable to check out shooting
a panorama style format so I have
a couple old used panoramic cameras
okay that I bought at the at a ramen used
Department it's been great I i've loved playing with these
a camera kinda brings me back to a time when I shot a lot of panorama
for magazines like life so I've been experimenting as I say with pushing the
panoramic camera in close and using it as a portrait camera
so in this instance said it couldn't be simpler I'm out in the hard light %uh
New Mexico and there's a church in the distance
you know Santa Fe photo workshops church
if you've been out there you're familiar with it an upfront in here
I put my subjects now I have three different subjects
to them are in this configuration and then there's another subject I have
with a slightly different you know we're look
looking further towards kinda ranch-style barn
you know type thing but the approach
is the same across the three portrait by Joe McNally here for Adorama
be sure to check out at around his latest contest to win prizes
to like this I used a beauty dish
Elinchrom beauty dish hooked up to an Elinchrom Ranger power pack
okay and that the panel cameras right about here
okay molecular wide camera there
you know kind of thing but I've got the the addition as close as I can possibly
get it on us assisstant and the beauty dish as you know it's got a big
configuration kinda like a
big salad bowl type a thing and
it produces a hard light the has edge but it's also very defining and
in in a certain way beautiful you know even though it is
very crisp and very very sharp as a light
you can see here the configuration have it is
is pretty narrow okay this is a this is actually pretty
ugly beauty dish it's been on the road for a long time so it's taken
its hits what happens a course is the last pours out here from the lamp head
at the actual flash and a
dishes into what's called a deflector in this instance we use the silver one
the covers the light like this and then that light radiates around the shapes
and we also put what we call a sock or diffuser
just an elastic because all around this particular
late shaper and just takes a little bit at the edge
of it so hence the bright sunlight or their
that hard satellite was matched in terms the quality allied
with the beauty dish light a kind and
you know had a certain synchronicity so here
on the power pack is down on the ground here I'm using our
a pack a wizard radio to get from the panel camera
to the PAC full blast applied
lot of power at the PAC to match the
surrounding very bright daylight and give me big *** top so I have
front to back sharpness through the pan ok amor and
you know I didn't use pixels gang
to do this use this
offered 100 black-on-white okay and getting back into a little bit a film
shooting
and it's been a lot of fun this is Joe McNally
