jbjb{x{x Black Swan, yes, it s one ballerina s trip into crazytown as Natalie Portman plays
both sides of the Swan Lake ballet. Natalie Portman is the black swan and the white swan
the white swan being virginal and innocent, and the black swan being seductive and dark.
Director Darren Aronofsky, who directed Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler, and
here s the trailer now: I just want to be perfect. Sweet, sweet girl. The only person
standing in your way is you. You really need to relax. s my turn! What happened to my sweet
girl? s gone! There you go. Clearly a hot lesbian scene and everything, but we ll get
to that later. s funny how they re playing up the whole music aspect, because the only
thing I can remember from the movie is the symphony. Yeah, I know. I had Tchaikovsky
stuck in my head for, like, hours and hours. So you loved this? Yeah, I thought it was
well, it s funny. I was telling my mom: I don t know where all of this excitement about
Black Swan is coming from because people forget that Darren Aronofsky makes really disturbing
movies, except for the Wrestler. I mean, Requiem for a Dream is the best movie you never want
to see again. Everything is great, the score is great but it s so upsetting you can t watch
it anymore. And this is a movie that is relentlessly dark. And everybody is kind of horrible. Her
mother is this horrible, scary stage mother. It s very tense, and they executed that part
of the movie well. Natalie Portman is going crazy and there s this sense of dread, but
I don t know if I d want to watch it again. The look into the ballet world is totally
fascinating the nitty gritty backstage and all of the political stuff really well done.
This movie has been labeled as a psycho-*** thriller skyrocket, which is not a term I
ve heard in quite some time. Not since Basic Instinct. Right. It s a really strong movie.
I don t think it s for everyone. I think a lot of moms and older people will be like,
I thought this was about ballet. I don t know, I m a mom, and I dug it. I don t. I think
moms will like it. It s not for everyone. It will divide people, but if you go with
it. If you re willing to go over the top with it, it s very stylistic I mean it s a horror
movie at its core, and in any other director s hands it would be crazy. But because it
s the artistry of Darren Aronofsky it s this stripped down look of the Wrestler. It s a
lot like the Wrestler, like the behind the scenes and the obsession with and the manusia
of that grueling physical activity. Then, there s this visual flare. This hallucinatory
flare to it s gorgeous. Yeah. You re not with me on this. I do like this movie. I like it.
I do want to point out that our director, Andrew, is hiding out because he doesn t want
us to spoil it. re not going to spoil it, we re professionals here. re not going to
spoil it, but I do want to take this time to point out that Andrew s a huge jerk. I
did like this movie, but it s a difficult movie, and I did have some problems with it.
Partly, it was overly loud in some places. I mean, that makes me sound like I m a million
years old, but it was screechy. I feel like that s kind of a cop out. It s a little red.
For me, this was a bit of a throwback to two of Aronofsky s previous movies. There s a
lot of in this. I wanted to see some more Pi in this. I m talking about cherry not talking
about sorry We are going to talk about I know. We re going to talk about in this movie. There
are a lot of elements of Requiem for a Dream, a lot of elements of Pi, when it came to her
downward spiral. I actually don t think the characters were as vicious as you thought,
Jonathan. I actually found the mother wasn t painted in that broad of a stroke. I actually
felt like there was some nuance there. I mean, it was scary in the sense you see this girl
in her twenties living in what looks like a child s bedroom. And she s so high-strung,
you begin to understand why she falls apart. For instance, Mila Kunis character aside from
the projections is somebody that Portman s character, Nina, needs to project this actions
on her. Mila Kunis character actually seems like she s okay. I think she s a difficult
character because a lot of her character are Natalie Portman s feelings of craziness projected
on her, and you don t know whether these hallucinations are actually hallucinations or actually happening.
Right. Even the director character, played by Vincent Cassel, isn t the stereotype yes,
he s doing some very seductive things, and he s messing with Nina s head, but not to
the degree you expect it. s not his fault she goes nuts. I don t think he pushes her
Exactly. She headed down that road. It s somebody going crazy. Aronofsky does that very well,
the downward spiral. He s able to put you in the head of someone who can t trust what
they re seeing. A lot of other directors do that and it seems hand-*** and obnoxious.
I feel he was doing a lot of Kronenberg in here Yeah,. The physical stuff she s seeing
But I did like it, except that the screechiness I mean, at times it does cross the line. It
goes a little over the top. The sound design, I ll give you, is a little over the top. The
echoed voices and little noises Right. And that didn t bother me so much in maybe because
it s his first movie, and the soundtrack sets me up for that the overexposed film and feeling
of it being raw. I felt I was looking for a little more subtlety. Don t get me wrong
there was some subtlety. One thing they do well is come out and explain the story of
Swan Lake for those who aren t familiar with it. But in some cases, it didn t grab me the
way it grabbed you guys. I dug it. You have to see it on the big screen. It s beautiful.
It s intense. It s nut-so. Both really good in it, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. The
trained for months and months. Natalie Portman, I guess, did ballet here and there growing
up, but for ten months before production she was doing five hours a day of ballet. That
s part of it. They re really doing this. And it s a very brave and demanding performance
Oscar nominations: I think Natalie Portman would be your front-runner at this point in
time for Best Actress. s her best performance since The Professional, which if you watch
it, she s unbelievable in it. She did The Professional when she was thirteen. They made
good use of her persona. She seems to inhabit this ingenue world, and they twist and tweak
that well. But there s things I wished they d have explored a little more. When you watch
the movie you see the physical toll. She gets out of bed and moves her feet around, and
her feet crack eight or ten times. You see them warming up. You see the physicality and
you see the toll it takes, but by the end of the second act that is abandoned. You don
t see Well, it becomes more psychological than it is physical. You see this part where
she gets news ballet shoes, and she has to bend the sole and wear them in, she has to
sew things and scuff up the bottoms. I thought that was neat to watch, like, the different
warm ups that they do. If you have a daughter you want to scare out of ballet, this is actually
a good movie to take them to. Do we want to talk about the lesbian scene for a second,
or should we just let folks enjoy it for themselves? m always up for discussing lesbian things!
The main two things people talk about with this movie is that they lost a lot of weight
and the lesbian scene. And they don t want to be asked about the lesbian scene anymore.
They don t want to talk about it. Good for them. I m glad they put their foot down about
that, I mean, it s such a small part of the movie. I don t want to give anything away.
Andrew, I m not trying to ruin it for you, but it does provide a kind of pivotal moment
in the reality of the movie. A reality break moment. The line that Mila Kunis has about
it later is actually one of the best lines in the movie. Her response to what Nina said,
is actually kind of funny. Actually, I found what was more moving was the earlier ***
scene. The first time she masturbates, and she s rediscovering Oh, I actually have a
body. Well, it s really well executed, hard to watch, great performances. Yeah, there
were a couple things that I thought were a bit overdone, but I still come in high on
this at an eight point four. Yes, you? m lowering the score. I think parts were disturbing and
others I just didn t like. I do think it s a good movie, I think it s worth seeing, but
I m not as high as you guys. I m giving it a six point five, which is still a positive
rating for me. I dug it. It s on my top ten list. I m giving it a nine. So our number
is eight. A nice even eight. h?LA :p?LA Black Swan, yes, it s one ballerina s trip into
