I'm Collette McBride. I work for Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International,
in creative industries and we are here at MIPCOM TV market in Cannes.
We are here because it's the biggest T.V. content market in the world. So its an ideal
place for Scottish companies to come and sell their content, to learn about new developments
in TV clashing with technology and so on and to have great networking with broadcasters
and distributers throughout the world
My experience in working with Scottish Enterprise and SDI has been fantastic. They really do
help exhilarate the business by supporting things like international growth, by holding
international workshops to really help you understand markets.
They also help you come to places like this, you know just by financially supporting the
travel or the ticket price for example and that really helps young businesses like us,
take the pressure off and just get to these markets.
SDI has been very good actually. They knew that I'd be in quite a bit in the last ten
years with ZDF and so forth.
They've come to me to say you know if we give you support to go to some of these markets
and congresses because I'm afraid you can't go to them all. I noticed this morning, sitting
down with a guy from Dublin, in an hour we did more than we have done on several telephone
conversations. I know it seems more costly to go abroad but it does make that bit of
difference I think
I've come to MIPCOM two or three times in the last four years.
Its only fairly recently that the work with Scottish Enterprise and so on has been there
and its been very useful. It's important not to be left out and you need sometimes
people who understand that and want to push it forward. So they have been very helpful.
It's nice to have SDI and so on backing. Its great to have people saying "go for
it", "here have this", "we will help you with that", "we'll help you with
that".
My connection with SDI is really as a content provider. But one of the reasons I'm in
MIPCOM this year is to meet up with them.
It seems a bit strange to come all the way over to Cannes to meet up with the Scottish
buddies but we will meet today and see in what ways their armory of contacts can help
me and in other ways I can help them as a small company to be part of their bigger machine.
We work closely with SDI and SE, so part of what we do with them is try and identify who's
really ready and at that stage for international exporting.
They are a pleasure to work with. They are always very forward thinking and equally SDI
and SE have also helped us, because they do lots of on the ground market intelligence
research. So they'll share that with us which helps us then look at how Scotland against
the UK. So it helps us to just look at what they are doing, are they doing anything different.
So we will often just show reports.
The help that SDI and Scottish Enterprise give make a difference.
Because these are expensive things to come to, it's expensive to prepare the materials,
its expensive to stay here. You know it just helps. There's no guarantee that you're going
to walk away with a multi-million dollar project and you could probably do it without it, but it
would be difficult.
