Hello and welcome to ITSE 2309 Database Concepts. This is a very interesting and challenging
course. How do I approach teaching this class? Having been a hiring supervisor, I kind of
know what employers are looking for, so the focus on the class is heavy on the theory
part, because you can apply the theory in any base concept environment you find. The
tool we'll use to explore these concepts is Oracle, but it is mostly focused on the theoretical
aspects of how a database functions. What we're going to look at in this class is look
at the ingredients that make a database how you put them together and how they operate.
If I was to give you let's say—flour, salt, butter, milk— what do ingredients represent?
Well, some people would say cake, some people would say pancake, well I'll say tortillas.
So even though you have the same ingredients, how you put them together will give you different
results. And we will look at the integration of all these parts and how they work; and
I look forward to working with you this semester.
