An introduction to library search. This tutorial will show you how to search for
something in the library and find it.
Your first stop should be the library search. You can find the library search
on the library homepage.
Library search will search our complete catalogue of books,
most online journals, and can link you to journal
articles from more than 100,000 titles to which UWE subscribes.
You can find the full text of many books and journals online,
as well as directions to print materials, DVD's
and other resources.
Let's say that you trying to find this book.
College Study Skills by Diana Van Blerkom.
Let's try using a couple keywords from the title and the author's surname,
This should allow us to find the book easily.
If you have trouble
finding what you want you can use the filters on the site to narrow it down by
content type,
date, library and so on....Once you have found the book,
click on the title. If the resource is available
electronically clicking on the title will open it, allowing you to read it
on your screen. If you're not on campus you may be asked to log-in
with your UWE username and password.
If the resource is not electronic you'll be taken to the check availability page.
Here you can see which campus the book is held at,
how long you can borrow it for, whether it is on the shelf,
or on loan and the shelf mark you need to find the book.
Using the shelf mark,
check the number range on the posters at the end of the shelves.
The books are placed in numerical order, and books from the same subject will have the
same number.
Once you have found the right number, look along the shelf for the right letters.
These refer to the first three letters from the author's
surname.
