Welcome to the final presentation in the NETS Leadership Academy Leadership and Advocacy
course, I'm Jason Borgen. We will reflect on Module 2 and introduce the final module
in which you will look into equity and digital-age learning as well as relook at your vision
for infusing technology into your schools and districts as ambassadors and leaders!
I hope you had a wonderful weekend, many of you probably had 3-days for the American Labor
Day Holiday which figuratively marks the end of summer.
Hopefully you had some outside time and were not too busy working and learning online,
though both are important!
In Module 2 we focused mainly on two out of the 5 ISTE Standards for Administrators. Promoting
professional learning is essential to be a leader in digital-age learning environments.
In our ever-changing landscape of effective instructional and educational tools, we cannot
restrict our professional growth to just conferences on our local colleagues. We must be informal
and ongoing learners.
Many of you shared a variety of learning communities your use. Edmodo seemed to be a very popular
one for many as well as Diigo and Twitter. Both, seem to provide some key aspects of
learning communities including sharing of resources and personal practices. Other ones
mentioned were Teacher 2.0, a more local online community specially for writing teachers in
southern California, and of course, ISTE's online community. It is great to see such
a wide range of informal learning going on to continue to refine your own practice. This
is such an important trait we must instill in our future leaders, our students.
Classroom 2.0 is another great, and probably the largest online community for educators
with over 70,000 members. Another one, specifically for school and district leaders is Admin 2.0.
A place for school leaders to share ongoing and relevant information to vision and new
school or district-wide implementation and effective decision making.
When it comes to effective decision making, we must look at data, forming partnerships,
and focus on systems. The 2nd standard area focused on in this module was systemic improvement.
Many of you provides effective pilot programs relating to tablet devices, focusing on improving
a specific aspect of student achievement from ELLs to Special Education. One of you even
mentioned an effective and cost-effective partnership with Intel. All of which shows
21st century leadership. Looking at indicator e, specifically, many of you event mentioned
the evaluation of infrastructure. Great job!
In this final module you will get a chance to reflection all 5 of the NETS-A leadership
standards. You will look more into digital-age learning and global collaboration as well
as relook into your vision you discussed in module 1.
In the previous module we looked at connecting with other educators to continue to grow and
learn relevant and emerging learning tools. What about using similar communities, for
students, to engage them in content-aligned learning? Skype for education at education.skype.com
is a great way to connect with other educators wanting to connect their classrooms. Not only
does this provide students skills in virtual collaboration it teaches them the importance
of cultural literacy. This is just one of the many programs that exists to connect students.
In this module you will review 3 different projects, Digital Storytelling Project at
ePals where student build digital stories with others around the globe, Rock our World
project where students make videos, music, and conversation, and Food and Culture project
helping student realize the importance of all aspects of health. Note that all the stories
listed above are links and clickable. You will take a leadership roll to reflect on
these sharing how you can assist sustaining and growing similar projects in your own capacity.
In the final assignment you will relook into your vision to evaluate the significant aspects
of implementation. This assignment will be submitted as a "journal entry" so please
let me know if you there are any issues.
And finally, in the last discussion, you will reflection on the Leadership and Advocacy
course. You will share the new ideas and learning from the course and how prepared and significant
the NETS for Administrators are to assist in moving your school or district forward.
