The USA is the only nation in the western world
where even 13-year-old kids
can be sentenced to life without parole.
About 2500 inmates who were youths or kids at the time of their offense
are incarcerated there.
Now the Supreme Court is going to verify for the first time,
if such draconian punishment for teenagers is constitutional.
Our USA correspondent Ulrich Oppold
visited a girl sentenced to life without parole.
As youths they were sentenced and locked away forever,
sometimes even without having killed, hurt or abused anyone.
In a Florida prison we meet Courtney Schulhoff.
She was 16, when she incited her boyfriend to kill her own father,
who had repeatedly *** and abused her.
While her boyfriend murdered her sleeping father with a baseball bat,
Courtney waited outside the house with the dog.
The 16-year-old was sentenced to life without parole for incitement to ***.
Therewith the court explicitly denied her the chance to ask for release
even after decades in prison.
The 21-year-old today regrets what she did.
She is already imprisoned for 5 years now
and meanwhile found a replacement family.
Everything looks like Courtney Schulhoff
will die in prison once.
A fight against a merciless criminal justice.
More than 2500 people are incarcerated in the US
for crimes they commited as kids or juveniles.
