This is Amos from Moog Music here with UniqueSquared at the NAMM show 2014 where we are showing
the new Sub 37 synthesizer. This is really just sort of the total package from Moog.
We've been listening to our customers and we've taken the feedback from our previous
instruments and tried to deliver just about everything everyone has asked for to the best
of our ability. So I'd like to give you a brief walkthrough and show you what we've
done. So check it out this is the Sub 37. It's based on the Sub Phatty synthesizer architecture
which we introduced last year and in that case we had a two octave keyboard and a smaller
panel and we were challenged to try and fit all of the cool functionality that we wanted
to deliver into that package and as a consequence we hit a lot of the coolest features inside
and under the panel. In this case we extended the keyboard to three octaves and so we had
a lot more room to work with and we are able to bring all of these great features out to
the panel. We have a fully featured arpeggiator and step sequencer here which is new for Moog.
Here on the panel you've got synchronization and a wide range control. A lot of options.
Your classic patterns of up down order and random and there's also this step and step
record mode. This is a very nice feature where you can enter sort of SH style. You can play
notes in any order you like and then go into step mode and play them back. Coming soon,
this is an early NAMM prototype so not everything is fully available. When we are shipping in
May this will be all implemented. We have these 16 preset buttons which are quick access
to 256 presets. There's 16 banks of 16 presets and also sixteen buttons in a row is really
nice for XOX style step sequencing. A lot of hands on sequencing ability in addition
to all of the hands on tweak-ability. Moving along the panel we have two fully independent
modulation busses. There are two LFOs with the classic LFO wave shapes and also programmable
modulation sources that you can set up. Things like the key pitch from the sequencer, and
additional list controls. You have fully independent destinations for filter, pitch modulation,
and a controllable programmable modulation destination that lets you do really cool stuff
like let you use one LFO to change the rate of the other LFO, you can modulate the VCA
level for AM amplitude modulation sounds. Your classic pulse wave modulation, full wave
form modulation, noise level for kind of percussive and flute sounds. A whole host of others.
Two fully featured modulation buses really lets you bring out the most motion and dynamic
range of the sounds. Moving on to the oscillator section. Another innovation that we've added
here is Duo Mode. As you can see the Sub Phatty is labeled a paraphonic synthesizer. What
we mean there is it is a basic, single synthesizer voice but you can now control the pitch of
the two oscillators independently. So you can hold down a bass line on oscillator one
and the sub oscillator. You can play an independent lead over top of it on oscillator two or you
can play intervals and this really expands the range of performance that you can deliver.
In the mixer section we've added on/off control for each oscillator similar to the MiniMoog
Model D and in addition we've added built in feedback control which is a trick from
the Model D where you take the mixer output of all of your oscillators and route it back
in to the external input. Then you can crank that up as loud as it will go and get this
incredible toothy, hairy, amazing on the edge on instability sound that is just so organic.
It really brings the instrument to life. Another thing that we've brought out on the panel
that was hidden on our previous synthesizer is control volt filter slope so you can select
6, 12, 18, or 24 db per octave rolloff of your low pass filter that gives you completely
different sonic characteristics to your sound. You can get really bright and edgy sounds
that are different than the classic Moog and then all the way down in stages to the really
rich liquid four pole filter sound that we're know for. In the envelope section, we've also
added a ton of new features and functionality. These buttons here control additional features.
You can latch on the envelopes and have them running freely, independent of the keyboard.
You can loop them so they become additional modulation sources with a complex shape of
modulation that's controlled by your normal envelope knobs. You can do your classic multi
trigger and reset which if you are familiar with mono synths these are useful performance
features that let you change how percussive or liquid your sound is very easily from the
front panel. Additionally you have other hidden controls that were available on the Sub Phatty:
the amplitude, the envelope delay and hold sections, velocity control is directly available,
and then keyboard tracking of the envelope so they can get shorter and longer as you
play up and down the keyboard. This is really nice for making lively, organic, living kind
of sounds where every note has it's own character. This is all of the things that people wished
were on our earlier synths, asked us for, said they liked and we put it all together
in a beautiful package in the classic Phatty series chassis. Aftertouch available directly
from the keyboard. CV inputs on the side and we think that this will really deliver what
people want from Moog and we are happy to present it to you this year. This is the Sub
37 and you are watching UniqueSquared.com.
