Another category of English clocks is really a hybrid. They're called Anglo-American clocks.
The Cases, all the decorative part you can see here, were made in England, but the Movements
were, were inexpensive American, Connecticut, Movements that were imported to put in these
Cases. As a lot of the cost of English clocks was in the old fashioned, high quality method
of making the Movements. So if they could get an inexpensive Movement, and put it in
an attractive Case, that was something they could do and sell a less expensive, less expensive
clock in England. These were typically quite ornate. You can see in this case, we have
inlayed Silver or Mother of Pearl in the Case. They often have this kind of School clock
design, as you see, but they come in other designs as well. Inside is probably a Movement
made by New Haven or one of the Connecticut companies, it would, in this case, it's just
a timepiece, you see, but often they were time and strike as well, and at least some
of the history suggests that these Cases made in England were made by very skilled Italian
craftsmen who were coming to England in order to better themselves, to find better paying
jobs. So they were very skilled and they were available for work at a reasonable wage. So
a lot of these Anglo-American clocks were made by very skilled craftspeople of the time.
