Jen Waldburger: Let's talk about some of the ways to nurture attachment.
Holding your baby is a great way to encourage her attachment to you. Notice what she seems
to enjoy. Lots of cuddles and squeezes or a lighter touch with a little bit less pressure.
Talking or singing to her. Does she become more animated when you're more energetic or
does she seem to prefer a softer tone of ways? Listening to her is important too. Does she
have different cries when she's hungry or tired or when she's over stimulated? Mirroring
her facial expressions and coos and babbling sounds. You'll start to notice that certain
sounds or expressions could mean she's about to start crying, that she's tired, or maybe
that she's just pooped. Mirroring is one of the most important tools you can use to help
your baby develop a sense of self-confidence at this stage. It also helps her begin to
regulate her own internal systems. Making steady eye contact. Hold the baby's
gaze for a few moments then watch as she looks away briefly to take a break and then looks
back at you to reconnect. This is self-regulation and action. She's regulating her emotional
intimacy with you.
