yes, the sun is out but this is not a joke
we are in London indeed
today we're in Victoria Park to
interview a guy called David, he teaches
swing dance in here, in this pub here
- how're you doing? - I'm okay, "not bad" as people say are
yeah mustn't grumble, I mustn't... there's no need to grumble
the English never say I'm great
they always say...
they all means it's fine
where are we now?
so this is Victoria Park
which is in the East End, it's a huge park not too far
from where the Olympics took place in 2012
I've just learned that this is Britain's favourite park
so they say
- How did you start? - Dancing?
I saw a sign up in a pub, in a different pub, in the East End
I went on one week and I thought: Swing Dancing, I heard of that
I went to one class and I was hooked
and I've been going ever since
it was just love at first sight
ok, before dancing a little bit, let's do
phrase in the box
crack on with something means to get on with something
oh let's... should we crack on? Should we start the interview? Should we crack on?
- Next one - Yep
"No frills" is when something is very cheap
so a no-frills thing is when you just get the basics
okay, can we say that a service is no-frills?
yeah definitely, I mean
a frill is a little thing you get on the edge of a, like, a duvet cover
a little fancy bit
so "no frills" means no fancy bits, just the basics
Banter is, like, chat between people
maybe in the pub, it's supposed to be funny and
or you have it at work when you're bored
Banter just means is all fun, all having a laugh with each other
are we having a laugh?
are you having a laugh
can you translate that as "joke" or not really
some of it might be funny, but it's just back and forth between people
it's just kind of spirited conversation, not necessarily jokes
zebra crossing is like a road crossing where it's black and white like a zebra stripes
- There's one right here - Yeah, the one out there
and in England when you put a foot, one foot on the zebra crossing the traffic has to stop
as if by magic, then you look and then you can go across
is there always a light on top of the...
yeah these yellow lights they called Belisha beacons
and I think Belisha is the man who invented them probably
"in the last few months, this country"
thanks, man
- shall we go inside? - yeah
what are we doing in there?
So we're gonna go upstairs, i'm going to show you a few dance moves
perfect
what kind of music do you use?
I like to use music from back in the day because there are still bands that are doing this
"back in the day" is a good one
here they are, guys
so what we're gonna do is some
and Charlston is a dance which started in the twenties
back in the States, in America
so take your right hand
and we're gonna take your right leg and kick across your body
and then down
then we're gonna switch hands
i'm going to kick across and down
and we're just gonna do this
we're gonna go across and down, kick and down
kick and down, kick and down yeah
then we're gonna do a thing where we turn around on the spot
so we're gonna do these kicks, kick and down
and then you're going to take four steps going towards your left shoulder
right, left, right
and then back to where we were
so we've got these Charleston
kick and... one more time kick and down and then
four steps: 1, 2, 3, 4 and then back to the start
yeah exactly it's good
thanks, guys, that was wicked, brilliant
what else can we use to describe this
awesome... a bit American
groovy... it's what your dad would say
great
see you next episode, bye!
- See you "in" the next episode? - See you "in" the next episode, yeah
- I think I might be wrong... - Really?
