Hello everyone. My name is Jennifer Luo, a Chinese Culture teacher in Bergen Christian Chinese School
The program I am about to introduce to you is a newly designed class called Window to China
China is a united multi ethnic country
Through the long process of historical development
people from many different ethnic groups have together opened up the vast territory
created an outstanding culture, and helped shape the current form of the Chinese nation
Window to China is a serial programs designed to acquaint the students with rudimentary knowledge on three subjects including
Chinese history, Chinese geography and Chinese culture
We will introduce important events and figures in Chinese history
briefly describe the major natural and cultural features of Chinese geography
and introduce the essence of the Chinese culture, habits and customs
The class is taught in both Chinese and English
and it is best for students of Grade 5 and up
The class is arranged to incorporate various teaching methods
such as videos presentations, games, and arts creations,
to improve students' comprehension and spark their interests
For example
videos of China’s most famous scenes will be played to show the beauty and charm of the country
and Peking Opera will be played for students to experience this Chinese national essence
We will see how this magical thing, Chinese abacus, does calculations
When talking about Chinese traditional festivals, we will taste some Chinese foods.
We may also teach Chinese folk dance and basic Kong Fu positions depending on the interests of student
We hope our students will have the same amount of fun as we do
You probably can’t better understand another nation’s culture without knowing the virtues they hold
A major topic in this program is Chinese traditional virtues
this seemingly-complicated topic will be taught through the most well-known and carefully selected Chinese historical tales to best elaborate the points
For example, the story of Yue Fei for patriotic sentiments
and “Kongrong yielding bigger pears” on comity within family.
More than that, we will take opportunities to encourage students to link those virtues with the good qualities God expects us to have
As a Christian Chinese School, the program not only offers basic knowledge to students about China
but also intends for them to jointly, from time to time,
review the message that we are people belonging to God
We all love our countries in this world, but we love God’s kingdom more
We fully understand how busy your and your kids' schedules are
So this series is so designed that any students may join at any stages,
full or part time, and tuition will be charged proportionately
You are welcome to register at any time during the school year
