[Bill Germinal of Radio Bakdaw] How does communication, like
Radio Bakdaw, help you on the operations for the community?
[John Ging] Information is vital so people want to know what’s
happening and that’s why this radio station – Radio Bakdaw and
what you’re doing here – is also lifesaving. You’re putting out
very important information. You’re telling people about the
situation. You’re updating them on what is happening.
You’re giving them hope. But you’re also directing them.
You’re giving them information which is hugely important about
where the assistance is, what’s coming, what’s happening.
And you also, I was told you were receiving over 300 texts a day.
Which is fantastic. It means people are trusting you.
They’re appreciating what you’re doing. And it’s real.
So again, I congratulate you and everybody in this station
for what they’re doing and not just the lives that they’re
saving with the information that they provide but also the
hope that you’re giving.
You’re turning on a light. Information is like a light.
It’s taking people out of the dark.
And I congratulate you for that.
[Bill Germinal] Do you think the UN agencies are listening
enough to the community?
[John Ging] Well, this is the question for the community.
I must say that I am hearing from the people that I have
met so far, that they do feel that my colleagues are out
there, reaching out, wanting to know, listening and responding.
I have seen what my colleagues are doing and I’m very impressed,
I have to say. And the fact that they bring me here to your
station is again another example of how anxious they are that
we are communicating with the community. And it’s also an
opportunity for me to appreciate what you’re doing for your
community. So again, you can be absolutely sure that we are
here to help. If you come to help somebody, the first thing
you have to do is listen and the person that you’re there
to help, will tell you what they need. And then we start
working hard to help the people with what they need.
