>> During the 50th anniversary of Rice in '62, I guess, my mother was the model
for the advertising circular that was put into both the Houston Post and the Houston Chronicle.
My father who was a sophomore at the time, saw my mother's picture in this circular
and had a bet with his roommate as to who could get a date with her first.
My dad won the best.
My parents dated.
They got married and I was born in 1968.
>> I was on the Rice College Bowl team that appeared on national TV
on the GE College Bowl show in May and June of 1966.
We won all 5 times in a row which was as many times as a team could appear and as far
as far as I know we set several records in terms of the highest score that was recorded
in a single game and the highest total score.
It was a wonderful experience and one I will never forget.
>> In those days, we were working on big rotating machines.
[Inaudible] this big and if you had your hand in the wrong place, you could get a finger torn off
or if you got across the terminals, you might get 400 volts and get a good shock.
So at MIT, they were -- had little model engines or motors
and they'd work with these model motors.
And we asked the head of the engineering department why couldn't we do it like MIT?
He had a very simple answer.
You can't learn to tame lions playing with kittens.
>> Rice was a wonderful place to go to school.
It was a special time.
It's where you grow up and it's a place that teaches you about lifelong learning.
>> I learned a lot of lessons in those 4 years and most of those lessons that I learned.
Of course I learned a lot from the faculty but I learned a lot from my friends and to any
of those friends who are watching this, thank you for being a wonderful friend.
>> The old Wiess was like a motel 6.
It was not the nicest place to live but it had a lot of character
and I made a lot of great friends there.
>> I've made friends for life and to me that was probably the most lasting memory.
Those are some of the best people I know and I've shared my life with them and look forward
to doing so as we all grow older together.
