The specific name refers to the production Ladanifer labdanum, its origin is in southern Europe.
Their natural habitat is the western Mediterranean region, on acid soils, from dry to wet climates, altitudinal distribution abundant in the mountains of Toledo.
This resin was formerly used as a painkiller, currently is used in setting perfumes.
Evergreen shrub 1.5 to 3 m high.
The upper branches, leaves and inflorescences, are viscous to be coated with substances under secreting plant: labdanum.
Leaves are opposed, narrowly lanceolate and dark green, are whitish below. They are very sticky with an aromatic odor reminiscent balsam.
The large flowers are 5-10 cm and pure white, usually with a red spot at the base of each of the five petals.
A few hours after they are opened, its delicate flowers come off and fall, but are born in such quantities that the bushes are permanently covered with color.
The fruit is a globose capsule with 7-10 compartments that open at maturity.
