The project that I work on is called Break Away, and that's an alternative respite project.
We hold a budget on behalf of the individuals called an Individual Service Fund, or an ISF,
and that allows individuals to self direct their support without the burden of holding
their own budget and managing that budget. The other thing we are able to do cause we
hold that budget is: we can pool resources for individuals so people can pool their money
to recruit staff, and this makes people's budgets go further and it helps people to
develop friendships and meet new people. It takes a lot of pressure off carers who previously
felt that they are the people responsible for the social life of the person they care
for, particularly older carers who find it a lot more challenging.
I was the first person with to be organised with Break Away, and they help to be out at
the weekend like tonight today. It makes of me a big difference to get us independence
for us.
