Hey, it's Ruth Sherman, CEO and Celebrity Speech and Media Coach, but you don't have
to be famous to work with me.
I have a confession to make: I love to swear. That's right, I love to use four-letter words.
My favorite four-letter word begins with an F and my second favorite begins with an S.
So I've been thinking about this. I've actually been swearing more than I ever have in the
past. And I actually remember studying the use of four-letter words and taboo words when
I was in grad school in communication. We actually... a professor told us that it is
a way for us to vent.
Of course it beats punching somebody in the face, right? or slugging somebody or getting
into any kind of a physical altercation.
So using a swear word makes us feel better. It certainly makes me feel better.
Now, in the past, I would've said, never, never swear in front of clients, never swear
in a professional setting. But I've changed a little bit on that. And this is how it's
changed. While I would not, of course, ever swear or use a four-letter word with a new
cient, I would avoid it in corporate settings, I'm less inclined to do so in settings where
I'm working one-on-one with people I have a relationship with, even if they're clients.
I also try to read the room. I try to see if people are offended by the use of four-letter
words, whether they initiate it, whether they use them, in which case I feel like I have
permission.
So, I wanted to come clean and I wanted to say, I love swearing. It makes me feel better
and I wanted to know what your thoughts were about that. How do you feel about using four-letter
words or other swear words that aren't really supposed to be mentioned in polite company.
I would love to know. And I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!
