Open Weekend is an opportunity for young people to come to the National Portrait Gallery,
engage with the Collection, engage with art generally and to make work. It’s a chance
for them to push their practice, to stretch themselves a bit.
We’re looking at a variety
of different approaches to making a portrait. So, they might be very used to drawing on
paper with a pencils, but they might never have attempted to make a portrait out of tissue
paper that they’ve torn up. So, they’ll be trying different materials, different approaches
and it might just give them a bit more scope when making their own work.
Within hours
you can see people’s confidence growing and their drawing improving enormously ... you
can see it right in front of your eyes.
