This is Designing Spaces: Think Green, the show that's all about
you, your living space, and living a more eco-freidnly
lifestyle. Today, we look at how our homes,
surroundings, even our transportation are all parts of
one big picture that's moving us towards a better world.
A healthier environment means healthier lives for all of us.
So, let's get started, and Think Green.
Lawn care traditionally means gasoline powered tools, but now,
a new generation of lawn care equipment is changing the
picture. New, rechargeable battery
technology has brought us yard maintenance tools that can
deliver the performance you require.
Think Green gets out in the yard to see the latest.
Take a look. (MUSIC).
Yeah, I really like workin' on the yard.
I take a lot of pride in it. I think it looks nice.
A lot of the yard work power tools I have though, I've had
for some time, and they're all gasoline powered.
I really like to go green, so I wouldn't have to keep a can of
gas in the garage, and inhale the fumes from the power motors.
I'd really like electric tools, but are they up to par?
Can I get the job done? Think Green got Peter Kilcullen,
from Greenworks, to pay Matt a visit, and show him how his lawn
and landscape can be green in more than one way.
Peter brought along a selection of electrically powered yard and
landscape maintenance tools for Matt to try out, including a new
dual blade lawnmower. (MUSIC).
These power yard tools look great.
I mean, thanks for bringing them out.
Sure. I really want to get away from
using gasoline. Right.
But, can you explain the advantages of using battery
powered tools over gasoline powered tools?
Well, you're gonna love it. Zero emissions, no thinking
about, "Do I have enough gas?", no thinking about "Is there oil,
in there?", and the noise reduction is fantastic.
They're easy to use, and you're gonna be using a green tool,
which is tremendous. You know, I've used those NiCd
battery powered tools before, and frankly, I mean, they do
have their limitations. Exactly.
What you experience is that loss of power, as soon as you
start using those NiCd batteries.
What Greenworks has done has brought us 40 volt lithium ion
technology, so smooth, consistent power the whole life
of the battery. And, you can recharge those
batteries, right? Exactly.
A quick recharge. Three hours to recharge that
battery, and you can charge it again and again.
There's no memory to the battery, so season after season,
consistent power. Wow!
Well, you've brought out a trimmer,---.
Right. ---a lawnmower, a blower, and a
hedge trimmer. Right.
And, how am I gonna know which battery goes to which tool?
Again, Greenworks made it pretty easy.
All the batteries, those 40 volt batteries, will fit in each one
of your lawn tools, so the power's interchangeable, and
remember, smooth, consistent power in all your tools.
That's, that's really smart. OK.
So, uh, then, let's cut to the good part.
Oh, yeah. I really want to take this mower
out for a spin. Um, can you give me any pointers
on it? You are gonna love this
lawnmower. Check this out.
Two of those 40 volt lithium ion batteries, and then the latest
technology in those twin blades, giving you, really, that perfect
cut, and that's exactly what you want on the grass.
You have 70 minutes of run time on those twin batteries that
come with it. Easy starting.
now, that's the key. If you have experience with a
gas powered, trying to pull start that mower, this is gonna
be simple and easy to start every single time.
So, what do you say you take it for a spin?
Yeah. I'll fire it up, right now.
(LAUGHTER). (MUSIC).
(MOWER BLADES SPINNING). (MUSIC).
Works good. (LAWN BEING CUT).
(MUSIC). (LAWN BEING CUT).
(MUSIC). What do you think?
It really works. I mean, it's a nice looking
machine. Right.
It's really attractive, but I was afraid it just wouldn't cut
it. No pun intended.
Exactly. Well, everyone's impressed by
the power that you get. You've got dual batteries, 40
volt technology, and how about the great job that those twin
blades do? That, I mean, that's the latest
technology, and it really does a great job.
Before I finish the lawn, though, I'd really like to hear
about this hedge trimmer. Right, but this hedge trimmer,
again, is amazing. Lots of great technology from
that 24 inch cutting surface that we have,---.
(TRIMMER CUTTING). ---with those blades are going
in both directions, making for easier cutting, and then, also,
it rotates 90 degrees, so you're always at the perfect angle for
doing those hedging jobs. So, this is a great one.
40 minutes of run time, on that 40 volt battery.
So, it's gonna make life really easy.
And, what about the string trimmer?
String trimmer's the same. It's so great that you're
getting that 12 inch cutting path, you're getting the ability
with one touch of a button to go from a string trimmer, to an
edger. Same 40 volt technology, so
there's no cords, there's no gas, zero emissions, and you're
not sacrificing any power. I think we've got everything
covered. We really do.
That's what's so amazing about this, and I think everyone's
really impressed that you do get the power, you do get zero
emissions, no gas, no noise. I mean, this is the future, that
40 volt technology. The only problem is, when my
wife hears about this, she's gonna want to do the lawn.
