3M provides a convenient kit with everything needed to quickly make lugged motor lead connections
to feeder cables. Each kit makes three splices and is designed
to withstand the abrasion, moisture, grime, and temperature extremes of the industrial
environment.
3M brand motor lead connectors meet requirements for CSA and NRTL certification.
In this video, you'll see how to make a reliable pigtail splice using the 3M motor lead kit
5301.
Prepare cables according to standard procedures
Check to be sure that cable sizes fit within the kit range.
Then remove cable insulation for the length recommended by the terminal lug manufacturer.
To gauge mastic build-up in the next step, temporarily install the lug cover over bolted
lugs, leaving ½” or 13mm of the lug exposed.
Separate the cables and apply the mastic strip around insulation and between them at a position
just onto the insulation.
Build the thickness so that the overall diameter is slightly larger than the observed inside
diameter of the lug cover.
Press the cables together and be sure that no void exists between them.
Over wrap the mastic with 1 or 2 wraps of vinyl tape.
Note that the kit contains a small tube of silicone grease. Use it to lightly lubricate
the mastic-vinyl wrap.
This will help in installing the lug cover.
Install the lug cover.
Finally over wrap the end of the lug cover and onto the cables with 1 or 2 wraps of vinyl
tape.
The installation is now complete.
