welcome to the david packard phil hearing
news news day today
if you haven't yet heard the supreme court has issued its ruling on the
defense of marriage act and on proposition eight
the defense of marriage act which of course
bars the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages that
individual states
legalize has been ruled unconstitutional
by five-to-four in the supreme court just hours ago
anthony kennedy wrote the majority opinion he says the federal statute is
invalid for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose in effect
to disparage antic injure those whom the state
by it's marriage laws such a protected
in person heard and dignity
uh... the defense of marriage act was initially signed by bill clinton in
nineteen ninety six and he was president
and it is no more it is it is just no more that sit there will be
uh... hundreds of benefits
made available
in the past
only two
straight married couples which now gay married couples will be able to receive
this is huge this is just absolutely huge uh... uh... iodide wasn't effort so
many people earlier today
i was uh... uh... friend john becker who did the investigation of markets
bachmann sent a gay therapy clinic the undercover investigators the asian
and it has been michael were on the front page of huffington post today
ap the supreme court and is just it's just a very good day this is the the
dome a decision is fantastic
yet it still amazes me that it was five-to-four you know you would assume
that if all of these people were elected to this position where presumably you
have this great understanding of our constitution institution of the laws of
this country and you were all equally educated
you would pride at the same opinion on just about every issue d_n_a_ timing
it's likely debase if we split on whether something is constitutional
yes and now if you actually look at uh... the descent in this written by
scalia a release one of the defense he actually just says that they had no
legal standing to bring this case
uh... the united states didn't because president obama failed uh... to uh... to
fan the law so the house republicans brought the case right asso you know
some of the justices just said that they shouldn't even heard it in the same way
that different justices said the same thing for the project case how much
money was wasted by those house republicans getting that legal team to
do this to to handle the down the case unbelievable now let's talk about prop
eight as well
property
the vote again five four by the court
it leaves in place and this is some people are telling me that they're not
exactly understanding
the five-four decision on property the california
gay marriage law
uh... bill leaves in place in the initial trial court declaration that the
ban is unconstitutional so california officials will probably
uh... rely on that ruling to allow resuming same sex unions in in probably
within the next
some some individuals were hoping that bond prop eight the supreme court would
make a broader
ruling and say
any gay marriage ban in any state would be unconstitutional the supreme court
did not do that they basically said that those the initial appeal
of the profit eight decision
was uh... did they did not have standing those but making the initial appeal did
not have standing i would give this
i wouldn't call it
two out of to when we think of the two decisions
the prop eight decision is still obviously better than than with the way
it could have gone i would call it
one point five out of two or maybe one point six three
you might be able to sway me one point six four out of two lewis that if we can
get your one point seven five i don't think we can okay
all lottery action religious conservatives going absolutely not will
be talking to brian fisher on an upcoming show i will ask him
do you now realize that u
by opposing equality are going to be looked at in history the same way that
those who opposed interracial marriage are looked at now i'd assume he will not
agree with that but we will ask 'em right when you think you're doing god's
work you don't care about how you reviewed speaking of god's work mike
huckabee
twi did my thoughts on the supreme court ruling that determined that same sex
marriage is okay
jesus wept
maybe jesus would be weeping uh... tears of joy
i don't know i think that uh... the jesus like thing
is this rule if jesus has been watching what's been happening in this country
for the past uh...
a four hundred years five hundred years uh...
he's been crying for a long time great britain for reasons that my company poly
doesn't agree with
this is also very funny
uh... congresswoman nancy pelosi was asked today
what do you think of
michelle bachman statement that the ruling goes against god's will have
something like that
check out what nancy pelosi said it is a little hard to hear but let's take a
listen
about statement
and his with
vision
godward
the
who cares
okay rs there wasn't even a
who cares who is
who cares
and i think that that's the right answer because it doesn't matter whether
religion is or is it important to you
that's not the issue
the issue is whether the supreme court should be legislating
based on what that the secret tax
of one religion
supposedly say the answers and course there
pattern i'll come in sensitivity what's rats absolute there
this is going to be wide ranging in that now we're going to see
there's still a lot of student there is i think i don't know remember this fact
is still true we did a story about this about a year ago
basically
more states in the u_s_ where you can have sex animals then went to
that banned in states where two men can get marry so we have a long way to go
there still a lot of states in this country where you can get fired legally
for being gay so wheat did the work is just beginning now this is just aflame
work from the federal government
under which to push for a quality right now tom this is not
the this is not the end
now and i think you should expect in the next five years we're gonna see
enough states uh... that currently
and gay marriage a support it pass laws that they're statues to support it and
then you'll see like a tipping point we might have already reached the tipping
point where just happens very quickly no question about it
