ìThe column style used for this Greek temple completed in 438 BCE was borrowed from which
ancient civilization?î So, my answer has to deal with an ancient civilization. Also,
Iím looking to identify information about a Greek temple completed in 438 and the column
style of that particular temple. Ok, I think that gives me some stuff to work
with. I think that what I need to do is break this particular question down into parts to
learn a little bit about the first piece of information so I can then know what to figure
out next. I have to think now, what is it that I need to know first about ñ well, Iím
going to go back, I think the first thing I need to know about is this Greek temple.
So, why donít we pull up our search engine here. Type in ìgreek temple from 438 bceî.
Bing pulls back these results here ñ ìSacred placesî. Letís take a look atÖOh! Did you
notice right there in the snipit? ìCompleted in 438 BCE as a temple dedicated to AthenaÖî
Ok, so letís learn about that. I see that itís called ìThe Athenian Acropolisî. So
this is a place called Greece and it looks to be a picture of it. There seems to be something
on top and it looks like a temple. As I scroll through, what else can we find? Ok, so the
temple of Athena ñ but whatís this? As I read through this, it says ìThe Propylaea
(gateway) and the Parthenon were completedÖî So, I look at these images here and I can
see, hereís a reconstruction of that area called Acropolis and now itís referring to
this structure here which looks like a temple made up of a whole bunch of columns. Made
up of a whole bunch of columns. So, I believe whatís being looked for is the Parthenon
and I can see that it was completed by 438 BCE. Now, Iím pretty sure that this is the
temple that the challenge is referring to. So, now what I need to know is, find out what
type of column this is. So why donít I switch search engines and see what else we come up
with. How about letís find out about the Parthenon. I click on Parthenon, and I come
right away- the first one is a Wikipedia article. As I click onto that, I know what Iím looking
for are the columns. So, why donít I do a ìControl-Fî to search for the word ìcolumnsî.
I can see that there are 11 items of ìcolumnsî. Nothing there about the type of columns. There
is a second reference, there is a third reference, but again I donít see anything about a particular
type of column. We continue to click throughÖoh, but whatís this over here? ìÖstructurally
necessary to support the roof. On the exterior, the Doric columnsÖî So, I believe thatís
the type of column that we are looking for ñ Doric column. So, letís go back to our
good ëol search engine and type in ìgreeks borrowed doric column fromîand see what pops
up there. ìWhat are two things greek culture borrowed from otherÖî. Let me look at the
snipit. Oh, look at this. It says ìÖdoric columns borrowed from the romans.î Thatís
interesting. So, this is Answers.yahoo.com. I know about Q&A sites or answer sites. So,
these are individual people that are responding to it. So, whatís another one? ìDefinitions
of Doric Columnsî from eHow.com. ìOf the three column styles, Doric is the oldest,
dating back to about 600 BCE.î Oh, whatís this? ìThe concept of the column was borrowed
from the ancient EgyptiansÖî Well, eHow.com is a little bit more credible than a Q&A site.
Letís see what else we can find if there are other answers we can look into. Hereís
another one here from bobvilla.com if you know his television show. Let me click on
that and see what pops up. So, here we are on bobvilla.com and I think most of you recognize
him from a famous tv show about architecture. Letís see, ìArchitectural Styles from Classical
Columnsî. As I continue to look through here ñ ìThe Greeks borrowed the column from the
EgyptiansÖî So, there is more than one reference now to the Egyptians, but gosh, the Q&A site
answers at yahoo.com really through me off there. So, I am going to make a critical thinking
decision here and determine that the source of a Q&A website is not as credible as a source
of eHow.com, bobvilla.com. I believe this is going to be my answer ñ the answer is,
the Egyptian civilization.
