Good day. My name is Neen James and I wanted to follow up with some of the questions that
you had asked from the Productive Networking Program for Women in Law. There are a couple
of really great questions. So I thought the fastest way to answer them would be simply
with a little video. So thank you to Linda and to Mar who had sent them in.
There was a question posed about whether there is a combination between a planner and a crammer.
And you might remember that I have mentioned there was a productivity style called a slammer.
A slammer is where you are slammed in the middle of both styles. It could be that you
really are a crammer. But what happens is those planners look so organized. They look
like they have it together and you desperately want to be like that. Or maybe it is that
you are a planner but your life is so crazy full that you have had to slam everything
in, cram it all together. So yes, there is a hybrid of those styles for sure.
Another question that was posed was in relation to walking into a circle of people and whether
it would be seen as rude if you interrupted people. I don't believe so. I think one of
the things you want to do is you want to walk into a circle of people assuming that everyone
wants to meet you. And with that, it means that with a smile on your face and your hand
extended, people will welcome you into that circle. So don't make it awkward. Don't feel
awkward but feel great and feel positive about that.
There's a really cool little TED talk which is TED.com. If you go to TED.com, you'll be
able to Google and search by Amy Cuddy and Cuddy is spelled C-U-D-D-Y. Amy has some really
great tips on body language and how you can feel more confident and more powerful with
the body language that you use.
You might also want to check out our latest blog entry which was all about productive
body language if you want to feel more comfortable and more confident when you're in a networking
situation.
There was also another question posed about how do you ask someone for a tele-coffee or
a video conference without sounding awkward? The reality is it's only awkward if you make
it. The same assumption goes that if you want to walk into a circle, assume everybody wants
to meet you. If you want to have a tele-coffee with someone, remember that's where you make
a coffee and I make a coffee and we talk on the telephone. The way to do that is to assume
that people want to connect with you. Don't make it awkward.
So a simple script might be something along the lines of, "My name is ..." insert here,
"Neen James and I've really admired some of the things that you've been doing in the firm.
I would love be able to just tap into your brain for maybe 20 minutes so I was hoping
that I could organize 20 minutes of your time just to interview you on your current success
and some of the things that you've learned." Now, understand, most people love to talk
about themselves. So it should be pretty easy to be able to get some time with people.
If you have no success with that script then definitely email me. My email address is Neen@NeenJames.com.
You can follow me on Twitter. My Twitter handle is @NeenJames. Or you can come across to Facebook
and like us on Facebook as well. If we haven't already connected on LinkedIn, please feel
free to do that.
So hopefully ladies, that answer some of the question that you have. If you want any more
information as I said, please drop me an email. And thanks again for being part of the Productive
Networking for Women Lawyers. Take care.
