Hearing aids have five basic components, the microphone, which picks up the sound the amplifier,
that amplifies the sound where necessary, the speaker that sends the sound through to
the ear, the microchip, and the battery. These five basic pieces are protected by a hard
plastic case that fits either behind the ear or inside the ear canal. A digital hearing
aid analyses the sound it receives and then uses different amounts of amplification for
soft, moderate, and loud sounds. This means the wearer is able to hear softer sounds without
loud sounds being uncomfortably loud.
