The book is really about the journey of two boys and how you have two boys
who start off in similar circumstances
but end up going in two completely different places.
But that’s what the book is about,
the intent is also that I wanted people to understand that’s about much more
than just these two stories and just these two kids.
But it really is a journey of our society and journey of a generation
and why not only the decisions that we make, why they’re so important,
but also the people that we have in our lives,
who help us to make those choices, why they’re important to us.
. I think the university students are in a place where they understand
the collegiate experience can’t simply be about what you learn,
but it also has to be about what you give.
That’s what becoming a whole person really means and I
think for all university students they realize how blessed they are.
They’ve had people who have fought for them, who have advocated for them,
who are helping them to get to where they are right now
and who are continuing to help them.
That we can’t just take those blessings and those gifts and be selfish with them,
we have to then think about what thing can we do,
how do we take our tremendous amount of intellectual capital and curiosity
and just energy and put it towards solving a problem
that for so many years has seemed entrenched,
because it doesn’t have to be.
There’s a couple reasons why I think it’s so important
for young people to be involved in service.
One is if you do it while you’re young, you’ll do it for the rest of your life.
It’s just a proven fact that if you’re involved in service from a young age,
that this is something that will become a lifelong habit.
It’s also important because the communities that we live in
are the communities that not only that we’ll be in right now,
but the communities we’ll have a vested interest in,
have a long term interest as to where we go as a country,
and where we go as a community.
We cannot think that we can just board ourselves up behind
walls or behind gates and think that
because we’re there we’re somehow safe.
We have a vested interest in making sure that all people are
a part of this larger American Dream because it makes our country stronger.
And so to have college students as a part of that,
a part of that movement, has just been amazing and inspiring.
I’m really excited and I’m just so hopeful by the things that I’ve seen so far.
I mean the fact is that the University of Louisville has been on fire
and I’ve loved it and so I cannot wait to just roll my sleeves up with you all
and get busy and really start making
a dent in some of these issues that are facing the community.
