You just got the dreaded notice to appear for jury duty and now you’re trying to come
up with 3 different ways to get off of jury duty. Well let me tell you why you shouldn’t.
Come join me as I share with you this interesting information. Hi. I’m Gerry Oginski. I’m
a New York medical malpractice and personal injury trial attorney practicing law here
in the state of New York. You know when you get that jury notice you’re thinking oh
my god, I’m going to have to disrupt my life. I won’t be able to go to work. My
whole life is going to be destroyed for a couple days or maybe even weeks. As I go and
sit and serve as a juror on a particular case. Let me share with you why serving jury duty
on a civil case is a remarkable opportunity. First, you’re doing your civic duty. Now
a lot of people don’t think that much of doing their civic duty but it’s an incredible
opportunity for you to participate in the judicial process. You know, there aren’t
many opportunities that you will have during the course of your lifetime to actually try
and resolve a dispute between two different people – two different people who have opposing
arguments that totally believe different things. Someone believes they suffered harm, suffered
injury, as a result of somebody else’s wrongdoing. And on the other side, the person being accused
of the wrongdoing says “Hey, I didn’t do it and if I did it I’m not responsible
for your injuries.” It gives you a great opportunity to participate in that process.
If you determine that the person who committed the wrong is responsible for the injuries
that the person suffered, you will then have an opportunity to make it right. And the way
to make it right is by rewarding compensation. On the other hand, if you believe that the
person who is accused of wrongdoing did nothing wrong then it’s an opportunity to help the
person who believes that they did absolutely nothing wrong. So serving as a juror is an
incredible opportunity. And yes, it’s inconvenient. Yes, it’s not pleasant. Yes, it can be hostile
at times in the courtroom. But on the other hand, it can be very rewarding because you
as a member of the community can actually do something really good to help solve this
ongoing dispute. So why do I share this information with you? I share it with you just to give
you an insight and an understanding into what goes on when you get that notice from the
court that says hey, you’ve been selected for jury duty. Come on in and forget about
all your work. Forget about everything else and all your other obligations. I know it’s
happened to me. Lawyers are not immune to it either. So you know what, if you have questions
about your own particular legal matter, what I encourage you to do is pick up the phone
and call me. This is what I do every single day – handling medical malpractice, accident
and wrongful death cases here in the state of New York. You can reach me at 516-487-8207
or by email at lawmed10@yahoo.com. I’m Gerry Oginski, here in New York. Thanks so much
for watching.
