Hi! I'm Jordan Pederson for Expert Village. We're going to talk a little bit more about
the use of bear spray. Bear spray is meant to be carried where it can be used in a hurry.
You either wan to carry it on your belt or you want to carry it on the shoulder strap
of your pack where you can get at it. Don't put it down in the bottom of your pack or
in your saddle bag if you're riding horseback. Another thing you don't want to do is spray
it on your tent or around your camp like you would mosquito repellant. What that does is
it has certain vegetable materials in it, which may attract a bear to come and investigate.
This is only meant to be used on a up close confrontation with a bear and to be used in
an emergency when you feel your life and property are being threatened. You want to remove the
safety, you want to aim right between the eyes and you want to give at least a 5 second
blast.
You also want to take this in your tend at night with you and you want to have this available.
You want to have a flashlight in case you need to get up in the middle of the night.
You want to take your flashlight and if at all a partner with you where you can go out
and clear the area. Make sure there are no bears that are around your camp. Safety in
bear country is being alert and knowing what's going on and being alert to your surroundings.
That's what makes you safe in bear country. When you're in bear country it is wise to
take a tent. This protects you from the elements of course and it also keeps you from laying
on the ground in your sleeping bag and looking like a possible carcass that a bear would
come to investigate.
