Cancelling an Online Purchase
Buying online is getting easier all the time.
But sometimes getting what you buy takes longer than expected!
You should know that the law lets you cancel an Internet purchase when delivery takes too
long. But how long is too long? And how exactly
do you cancel your purchase? If the seller gave you a delivery date or
a number of days, you can cancel the purchase if the delivery is more than 30 days late.
If you weren't given a date or number of days, you can cancel if it has been more than 30
days since you placed the order. To cancel your purchase, you must send a « cancellation
notice » to the seller. You don't have to follow any special model:
your notice just has to tell the seller about your decision.
If you send this notice before you get your order, the seller must treat the purchase
as automatically cancelled. The seller must then give your money back
money within 15 days. If you receive what you bought after sending
your cancellation notice, you have 15 days to send it back to the seller, at the seller's
expense. It all seems pretty simple... but what if
the seller doesn't give your money back on time?
In that case, you have 60 days to react and contact your credit card company.
You can ask your credit card company for a full refund directly on your card! This is
called a « chargeback ». This request should be in writing and must
include certain information. After getting your chargeback request, the
credit card company must reimburse you within 90 days.
