Hello to all arhn.eu viewers! Tekkichi from Riot Games.
Well MOBA's been around for a long time. Right, I mean Aeon of Strife was kind of
the one that defined the genre. Morphed into the original DOTA and DOTA is the
root of a lot of MOBAs. So I'd actually say that MOBAs been around for a long time.
They've been very popular, right? So, I think it's an exciting time. It's really good
to see this genre evolve. League of Legends was an evolution of some of the
roots of the original MOBAs and we've enjoyed success and moved around and
have a really awesome fanbase and we're here in Gamescom and supporting that
amazing competitive, professional scene supported by tons of fans across the
world and that's amazing and humbling, actually. In terms of other MOBAs in the
genre, it's natural for things to evolve. At the start of any genre you're gonna have
a lot of things grow and a lot of different directions taken. I think it's actually an
exciting time. We're not really focused on threats or anything with that matter.
We're just gonna focus on making sure LoL is the most awesome experience for
players in North America, Europe, Asia in South-East Asia. Soon to be Brazil and
other parts around the world. We want to just support an awesome, competitive
scene as well and see the best professional talent of LoL players, you
know, kick *** and show us what we can do and what the game is capable of doing
and that's really exciting. I think it's good times ahead for everybody.
Dominion was launched last year. We're very satisified with the game and how it
shaped up and we've got a lot of dedicated fans who really love that game
mode. Recently actually we just released a new Custom Game mode called ARAM -
All Random, All Middle and that was just actually the result of our fans. We had a
lot of people in the community playing custom games where we would have all
random, all people in the middle of Summoner's Rift. Sometimes All Random,
All Bottom in Dominion. They created their own variation of the traditional LoL
style play and we, as a company thought that was really awesome. We actually did
an exercise, we do this now once a quarter. It's called Riot Thunderdome
where for 48 hours developers get together and work on whatever they want
related to LoL. And in 48 Hours they show it to everyone in the company. A small
team of awesome designers got together and were big fans of the ARAM game
mode and said: "You know what? I wanna see if we can take our Tutorial Map,
Proving Grounds and turn that into a single-lane ARAM type of mode and 48
hours it came out with a pretty awesome state. We decided that we liked it so much
that we would release to the fans about two months later after some polish and
tweaking and it's been very successful. You know you can look to things like that
as a source of inspiration for anything new in LoL. But in terms of new content
or new maps, we have nothing really to announce. We are really satisfied with the
direction we're going with our current maps and we will continue to support
them but you know - anything is possible in the future. Like I said before we're
focusing on LoL and just expanding the universe as we understand it. That said
we're really trying to find better ways to present the lore to our players besides
the bios that you read and the champions and things like the champion voiceovers
give character when you're playing the game. We're really thinking about what
are the ways to find new ways to deliver lore to our fans. Enrich people's
experience with the champions. I think you've seen us experiment a little bit with
this. Past couple of months we used to do launch comics and things like that and
we're talking about all sorts of stuff so I wouldn't rule out ways for us to expand
on how we're gonna bring our users into our lore in better ways but in terms of any
new games relating to the LoL universe that aren't LoL I don' think we have any
plans for that at the moment. Right now Riot's plans are to support LoL and we're
doing that by opening regional offices around the world to support our
playerbases in those specific regions, for example last year we've launched Korea.
They're responsible for launching LoL in Korea and the game's succeeded very
well there and that's a testament to their dedication. Our Riot Europe office in
Dublin services all of Europe and now we're gonna be expanding to Turkey and
Brazil so we can have regional markets that are serviced by Rioters. We have
community people and player sports people who listen to what those people
want. Our focus is on LoL and making sure it gets to new places where there are
players who want the game in their native language. And that's what we're trying to
do right now. Really support those players who may be in a place where they
don't have their native language supported and we want to really make
that happen for them. We recently launched Greece as a language we
supported and couple months... or was it a year ago we did the Polish version of
LoL and that was received well so we're just gonna continue to do things like that.
We have two new champions we're showing off here at Gamescom. One is on
the wall right here, that's Rengar, the Pridestalker, the other one is Syndra, The
Dark Sovereign. She's a new mage. Rengar is a lion-beast man and his role in
the game is gonna be an awesome new jungler and we really wanted to create a
champion that felt like an amazing hunter. Someone who was stalking you and really
gonna strike fear in your heart like Nocturne kind of does at the moment.
What I'm gonna do here is show you Rengar's abilities to give you a little
snippet of his lore. He was kind of abandoned by his race when he was a
child and he was adopted by a group of human hunters who trained him to be an
amazing hunter. Rengar's whole purpose in life is to hunt bigger and better prey
and mount their heads in his trophy room. He's been pretty successful with that until
he encountered a beast he'd never seen before and they had a vicious battle and
they both mortally wounded each other but escaped. He lost his eye in the
process and he's never lost a fight before so he's kind of really shaken up by this
and decides he's gonna rest up, train up and hunt down that creature once and for
all. He's come to LoL to hunt bigger and better prey. That's his core theme and that
manifests in his abilities as such. His passive allows him to jump out at enemies
from brush. So you can see this concentric circle here. Any enemy that
walks around him here if he autoattacks them he will automatically leap towards
them. Literally jumping out of the bushes to cut you down with his knives. The rest
of his abilities synergise around a new resource system we have called Ferocity.
It's kind of like a combo point system. The more Rengar uses his abilities he's able to
generate these combo points and when all five points of Ferocity are maxed out - When
he uses an ability a secondary effect happens on top of them. So for his "Q"
which is called Savagery, he does physical damage on his next hit and gets
movement speed. When he's maxed out on his Ferocity that increases on both
sides. His "W" is Battle Roar and this is an AOE effect around him. It damages
enemies, grants him armour and magic resistance for a little bit of time. When he
has full Ferocity up it also heals him. That's a really nice way to sustain. His
third ability is a Bola Strike. He throws out a bola which causes some physical
damage, slows the enemy by about 50% for a short period of time. If you're at max
ferocity if you hit this attack the target is rooted in place so he literally gets tripped
up in the bola wire. His ultimate is "Thrill of the Hunt". He goes stealth for a short
amount of time and all champions within 2000 range are revealed to him and you
guys will see it when I level him up, what that looks like. Let's see it in action. So
here's his passive. Too soon. Let's move up top. I'm gonna jump in this bush over
here and attack one of these minions that are just hanging out. I'll get close. So as
you saw, he literally leaped across the screen. That's pretty awesome. He also
has a custom item actually, that you can buy in the shop. It's called the "Bonetooth
Necklace" and it's a trophy necklace so the more kills you get while you own that
item, you get statistical bonuses and bonuses to your effects. He's encouraged
to get a lot of kills. I'm gonna go into the jungle here and try to get some minions
to level up as fast as I can. At max Ferocity now. Awesome. So as you can
see my abilities when I'm at max Ferocity, they change colour so the icons
themselves look different. Try to take down this guy. He just stunned me?
Okay. That's not nice. Not nice at all. But I'm almost close to getting my ultimate so
that's good. Heal over here. Something reset my key bindings so let's take care of
that. Not nice. Awesome. Well I just died. My gosh, I'm sorry guys. (So any tips on
how to play Rengar?) I think it's about making sure you are available to gank
your enemies as needed. So really pay attention to your teammates and be the
terrifying force you can be. You can stalk pretty awesome by using brush
successfully so keep him on map awareness, knowing when to support
your teammates. It's gonna be key to being succcessful with Rengar, here.
There's his necklace - Bonetooth Necklace right there. I'll buy a little
lifesteal item right here, keep us alive out there while we're trying to battle. (His
passive ability seems really awesome.) It's amazing. That kind of was what tied it all
together. Really helps to sell the fantasy of being a lion guy. I really just want to... I
just want to level up! (Seems like a really flavourful character. Like most of them.)
Thank you. Yeah, he's been very succesful in play-tests and we've been
pretty satisfied with him, so I'm excited. I'm excited for him to come out. The
designer that worked him was on our live design team for a long time. It was his
first champion and he did a really good job on him. Alright, here we go, here's his
ultimate. So watch what happens now. The screen turns red, you get this
awesome effect and now I can leap at anybody, anywhere. And it increases the
amount of Ferocity I generate so with conjunction with my abilities I can attack
faster and generate it faster. So in essence that's what Regnar's all about.
Using his cunning for success to ruin people's faces. So we'll load up the next
character, Dark Sovereign. She's gonna be a little bit easier to level up because
she's a ranged mage so we'll be able to just kind of farm traditionally. Syndra!
Here we go. Syndra, the Dark Sovereign. Her story goes: She used to be a little girl
in Ionia, that's the land where Irelia and other people are from. She had a lot of
natural talent for magic in a way that kind of disturbed her family and her village and
she was sent off to study at this magical institute and she was being taught by
Headmaster there and he actually had put some suppression charms on her to keep
her from realising her true power. And as she grew older she realised that
something wasn't right. She was being dumbed down in a way. So she confronts
her master about it and they fight. She ends up killing him and in that death battle he
reveals that, yes, inded, they've been keeping her down. She decides to kill
everybody in that school, raise the school into the sky and basically floats around
in a flying palace and is looking to wreck anyone who would stand against her. She is an
evil, evil woman. Her kit revolves around these dark energy spheres you see
floating around here. She has an ability to place these down on the map and they
cause damage to enemies as you'll see right there but she also has an ability to
manipulate them to do things for her. I'm gonna turn off Smart cast. (Can you make
her dance?) Would you like to see her dance? (Yes, please!) Why did that sound
so... interesting? (She's an interesting character.) Okay! I believe you. Wow,
really? (It's a german keyboard.) (Okay...Let's give up on that.) Yeah, so I
guess you guys will have to wait and see that dance later. Sorry there! I guarantee
you it's a very satisfying dance. (So what can you tell us about the style of play?)
Really, you know, as a mage she's gonna be great in mid-lane. She skills of AP and
she has a great combination of utility and damage so I place down my energy balls
and as you see it causes a area effect damage around the area that she places
it. Once it's on the ground though, it doesn't really do anything until you start
comboing your other abilities with it and as soon as I level up here, we'll get another one.
I now have her second ability, the "W", it's called "Force of Will".
I can actually pick up one of those dark spheres with that ability and drag it
around and then send it back towards someone. So she's able to pick up those
dark spheres and as she levels up she's gonna have about 3 of them out at any
given time so she has a lot of options there. I can also pick up minions, and this
is really new. We haven't done this before. And you can throw minions back
towards enemy and it causes them damage. If you throw your dark sphere
and successfully land it it will cause a little bit of slow effect on who you contact
it with. She's a little bit of a slow on her combination of "W" and "Q". Now, let me
show you her "E" ability. It's called "Scatter the Weak" and it's kind of a force
push ability. She forces air out in front of her so watch this, I'm gonna drop my "Q"
down here, now I'm gonna use "E". And it knocked the ball forward, and stunned
anyone that gotten in their path. She might not have the best escape but if
someone is chasing her she could buy herself some time by successfully
pushing back on them. Also while we continue to level I want to show you a
little trick here. That's going to be really cool and interesting for people who want
to do things like disrupt the jungle. Syndra does not fear the jungle at all
because she has an ability to lift up some of the most powerful creeps in the jungle
including the golem buff and the red lizard buff. So, say, that you want to get it out
of the jungle... See you later! That's gonna be pretty disruptive. He's now mad
at me, I better leave him alone. That's gonna lead to some interesting play.
That's why Syndra is probably gonna be a character who is gonna be hard to master
because she has a lot that she can do and so much potential to really cause some
serious damage and just displace people. She's crafty, she's tricksy and that all fits
with her theme of being kind of a really powerful sorceress who uses dark
energy. She not only is kind of a terrifying in her lane but she's gonna be able to
trick you and really show... She's kind of flashy in that way. A good Syndra player
should be pretty flashy. Alright, one more level to the ultimate. That's kind of a tour
de force here. When any orb that is on the ground, Syndra will fire on an enemy
champion and contrail that damage there. The more energy spheres are available,
the more damage the spell does. But they have to be planted. And not just the
passive ones floating around here. Slowed her down. Not ready to fire yet,
but I want her out of my lane. Got a nice little stun there. She snared me back.
Look at this magician duel. Unfortunately, I'm low on mana so I'm gonna have to go
back to base. But that's ok, got my teleport spell. We'll be able to easily level
up by the time we get back and I will show you her ultimate once and for all. So let's
go ahead and buy. Let's just buy little mana regen here. Give us what we need
and some pots. Wanna make sure we're able to really let her know that we mean
business here. Look at that, look at that combo! She's gonna run away. She'll be
back so we can use my ultimate on her. One more creature. Got this minion all for
myself. Great so now my ultimate is up. We're gonna wait for Morgana to come
back. In the mean time I'm just gonna be a jerk here and let the minions know that
they can't get away from me.
Where'd she go? She is definitely afraid of us. She's alive. She's bought some
boots. There she is! So she did not know we're hanging out, ready to let her know
that we don't like her. So I've got two orbs. I'm gonna hit the ultimate on her.
Focus fire big time. You will also notice, several more balls appeared so that I can
just really let her know that. Oh my gosh, who's gonna win this one? Oh! Wow. You
know. I got too cocky there. As always in League of Legends. Don't overextend
yourself when the champion's reaching that tower, stay away. And those are our
two new champions in League of Legends.
You know, different's ok. Different keeps things fresh. The one of the beauty of
League of Legends and fact that we do release content often is that when a new
character comes out it changes the way the game is played a little bit. If you want
to buy that champion or unlock the champion with IP, you know, it gives you
something new to learn. It also gives you something new to play against. And that
keeps the game fresh. And that along with balance changes and just the general new
releases that we do. I think that makes League of Legends an exciting game. So,
I hope our fans will like Rengar and the Dark Sovereign and they'll give them both
a try.
I'm pretty sure they'll love them. They're amazing.
They're great. It's like an example of evolution when you get something new,
yet you don't make a revolution where you blow everything up. It's like adding a
totally new aspect while still keeping everything the way it was.
There's a lot of ways you can innovate and bring something totally new and
there's a lot of ways that you can take something familiar and twist it in a way
that feels new again. And we like to do all of the above on League of Legends.
(Brilliant! Thank you for your time!) No problem, my pleasure, gentleman.
Hello to all your fans!
