>> CLAVENDA BRIGHT-PARKER: Thank you so much for this opportunity to visit our lab. This
is a marked improvement thanks to USAID and the PQM (Product Quality Management) of USP
(US Pharmacopeia). They brought in new equipment, glassware, and things that we need to truly
make this lab a lab that can test the counterfeit and substandard drugs that unfortunately flood
this market. This is the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority has
been recently been established and of course one of our priorities is to clean the market.
We tested random preparations from Liberia when I was in Ghana and I had the lab test
it, and it was 75% counterfeit and substandard. More than 75%, even towards 80%. So this is
heartbreaking for my people, and so if at the end of my careerI can ensure that the
pharmacies are importing and selling quality drugs that will be a great pleasure.

We're so pleased to receive our new equipment and very, very happy that USAID and USP have
given us this opportunity to clean this market.
