Welcome to preparing your course for Quality Matters review.
In this section, we will discuss creating rubrics for your courses.
When designing rubrics make sure the grading criteria is clear to the student. In addition,
the rubric must be easy to understand so the instructor can grade the material correctly.
Here we show the discussion rubric for HUM 1230. As you can see, the points within the
rubric are clearly stated and match the points within the course evaluation.
In order to achieve proper grading, one has to be specific when creating rubrics. The
example provided is an extremely specific rubric from CGS 1100. Giving explicit details
in every way.
While this is an acceptable rubric, rubrics like the one from GEB 1011 are also acceptable.
These rubrics are more preferable because they still describe what the students must
do while shorting the amount of content that goes into them. Thus making efficient use
of your time without the hassle of over simplifying it.
Finally, rubrics should be included within the assignment instructions for your course
material.
In addition, they should also be located within the "rubrics" folder in the syllabus and policies
link on the left menu.
By creating your rubrics within this manner, you will satisfy Quality Matters 3.2 and 3.3.
For these rubrics explain how a student will be evaluated on their completed work and what
they will receive for their work.
Thank you; we have just covered what is required for creating rubrics. If you would more information
on this subject, there will be examples and resources provided within the "examples" and
"resources" folders within this course.
