This Tokyo was painstaking to create, having about 7 layers of buildings
Most buildings are copy and paste, with a little variety to differentiate them
The "GPN" is a reference to Godzilla movies that feature this very organisation
This 'thermographic image' was inspired by the same image in Godzilla 1985
SGT Kisaka, this is my take on a Japanese accent. So bad I decided to keep it ONLY for Kisaka (1 line) and not use it for the main character General Watanabe.
APCs rolling out of a tunnel was the easiest and fastest way I could animate 'Japan's military muscle mobilizing'.
Notice how each 'flat' vehicle layer actually has a slight shear, a good technique for making 2d objects look a bit more like 3d
Soldiers with expressionless zombie faces
Deliberately kept Godzilla's legs out of the frame. The look dodgy when 'in water'.
Always make Godzilla roar when he's got nothing else to do. Roaring is fun!
This is General Watanabe on the left, a Japanese army General with a western upbringing.
My favourite part of this chapter, smashing a nuclear cooling tower, similar again to a scene from Godzilla 1985.
And US Army Colonel Franks on the right. Something of a nervous and naive character.
Snazzy binoculars aren't they.
A better decision would have been to make the 'crack lines' black, instead of light grey. Light grey looks weird.
Destroying stuff is fun to animate, but is often very time consuming
The spines are an integral part of Godzilla. They always glow when he is absorbing radiation, or using his ray.
That's a fire hydrant by the way :)
Tranquilizer rockets to my knowledge haven't been tried on Godzilla before, the standard fare is masers, rockets or artillery.
Godzilla is known for having a thick hide, However this Godzilla is not as big and indestructable as other Godzillas.
The Army has learned it's lessons from years gone by. It's APCs are fireproof.
This waterfront location was chosen so that a 'city' backdrop could be used, yet no buildings in front to obstruct view
This was incredibly hard to animate. Godzilla actually running. I decided not to do it again after seeing how it looked.
Mind you, at least my Godzilla is more nimble and light on his feet than a guy in a rubber suit... until the drugs kick in
One regret is not doing a few more shots like this, anything in the foreground adds depth to Godzilla.
Notice how there is a size/scale problem with the streetlights
These soldiers highly derivative of the ones from Godzilla Vs Megaguirus
I could never decide what to do with the camera in this sequence.
One option would have been violently shaking the camera as Godzilla stumbles,
But I resigned to a static shot, so we can see maximum carnage.
Nighty night, sleep tight...
These two should have been on a location that WASN'T pitch black.
A lastly, a zoom on the Aircraft Carrier. More dramatic than the laborious 'helicopter lifting shot' I had planned, whereby choppers lift Godzilla from the city street, to the deck.
And a little teaser, the first time we've even seen Mecha Bin Laden.
