Hello folks!
This is a simple video about drums quantization at Studio One
This is a multitrack acoustic drum recording
with Kick, Subkick, Snare Top and Snare Bottom, Hihat, Rack Tom, Floor Tom,
Overheads left and right and Room
The first step is determine the Song tempo
To this song i put 162 because I know that
this is the tempo
You can Tap the "tempo" word in Studio One to synchronize
The next step is to group all the drum tracks
This is essential in drums edition
You can't move a piece separately without
moving any others
Each piece is sounding in all mics, so we must edit all the tracks together
To group your tracks in Studio One, select
the first track, hold SHIFT (PC) and select the last. Then hit CTRL G (PC)
Thus, with the tracks grouped, the edits are performed simultaneously in all of
them
Let's start editing!
You have to open the AUDIO BEND menu
This is the tool to stretch audio in Studio One, we will be using in the drums
quantization
There is also the Quantize, which is excellent and has several options
But we'll use the Audio Bend in this video
In Audio Bend we choose the algorithm used to stretch the audio
Drums: To quantize drums
Sound: To quantize complete mix
Solo: To quantize monophonic like sources
Audio Bend: Specific Audio Bend tool algorithm
Next, select which tracks will be used as guides to the rhythm of drums and to the
quantization process
I usually always select kick, snare and hihat
which is where the base of the drums
If we select all tracks will be much information and there may be prejudice
quantization
We have to select only the core rhythm of the drums
Now we will detect transients, clicking in "Analyse"
NOTE: I'm using the Portuguese version of
Studio One, therefore, be guided by the positions of the buttons
The Studio One detects transients in all tracks and put bend markers on each
Bend markes are that blue vertical lines
We can move these bend markers to edit and quantize the drums
When moving a bend marker (transient), it is moved in all tracks. So we have
grouped them
This is the first editing i do in this Song. I hope it works...
You can adjust the threshold of transients detection
Next step is the quantization
See this kick that is not right on top of the bar 50
You can specify the percentage of quantization (strenght)
When applying the quantization, the transients are moved to the correct
location
May occur stretch to the audio
Instead of quantization, you can split Events at the detected transients
In this case, you can also mark the quantize
options after splitting, apply crossfades and consolidate editing, just in one click
I prefer to apply quantization, hear the results and adjust the details
We apply the quantization. Notice how the bass drum transient was moved to the
correct place
Will do again. Watch
...And see that you can choose the quantization precision
See...
The red transients are the quantized ones.
The green were little quantized
Note that, although this is a well played drums, there are many red transients
(quantized), which means that the quantization process further improved
time
Now let's hear and manually adjust something that still needs
We will use the Bend tool that allows us to
work with detected transients (bend markers)
In this we will editing with no phase or synch problems. There's nothing to worry
Use the metronome!
I think about 80% are quantized, let's just fix details
Let's go
See: most already corrected!
Good...
No problems so far...
A early snare.
Let's put in the right place...
Look at all the tracks are edited together
Perfect
A kick out. Let's adjust
Here's wrong
The early parts of the compass are delayed
Found an unnecessary transient. We will delete not to disturb
Let adjusting...
We will adjust all the pieces here...
Correct! Let's move on...
Let's listening and adjusting what is out of
place. Follow the images.
Remember that all red transients have been
adjusted by the program. In saving work!
Great
You can create a bend marker by clicking and edit as you wish
See this edition in this "flam" of the snare,
as an example of this
The best results you will hear after the Bounce (consolidate) of the tracks
Press CTRL B (PC) to bounce and hear the
final results
That's all!
